Engine Coolant leak. Header tank or sensor.
My 4.8 is; is slowly leaking coolant at the header tank / coolant level sensor? I know not which one? I attempted buy a new sensor O-Ring from BMW, who tell me I have to buy a new sensor? Which I have done. Now I find the new sensor has no O-Ring? And BMW now say that the O-Ring is built into/part of the header tank? They also now tell me (helpful) that a new header tank comes complete with a sensor & O-Ring? Any clues here? * Should I fit the new sensor to the old tank? * Should I buy a new tank with sensor? The price difference is about £100 UK Anybody had the tank leak and replaced it? Or just replaced the sensor? Bruce Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The coolant level sensor works by magnetism and is not in contact with the coolant so no seal is needed.

Now that’s interesting. When I removed my old sensor, coolant came out the hole. The original sensor looks to have a copper fork that goes inside the tank. The new one is covered completely in blue plastic with no metal visible.
I have cleaned the outside of the tank, to make leak spotting easier. Fitted the new sensor and will now wait & see. Thank you. Bruce Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
