Winter tyre sizes.

Hi this is my first post, from the UK, I've spotted a few posts regarding winter tyre sizes but I'm still not yet 100% sure on the exact tyre size I should go for.

I've purchased some standard 17' rims for my 2006 E53 X5 3.0d M-Sport with the hope I can save using and potentially ruining the standard 19's. I've decided on all terrain tyres as there's no point me going for anything more aggressive as there's a very small chance I'll take it fully off road.

I would like to get as bigger tyre as I can on these rims without sacrificing things like warning lights and on road handling. I know the standard tyres on these 17's are 235/65's if I put 265/70's all round will this trigger a great deal of negative issues? I just want to put a set of tyres on it for the winter months here, but of ice, sometimes a bit of snow but nothing too mental.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards

Matt

Winter tyre sizes.

I have 255/55-18 and 235/60-18. Same make and model tire. The 235s have 50% more traction on snow but I do just fine with the 255s I just use the 235s for showing off

Fair play, I wish I had a tyre warehouse to try some different ones on. Hoping someone has the perfect solution for this set of 17's. Is it even worth going wider then 235's on these? Will I just lose performance by having wider tyres?

Any wider you lose grip. BMW knew what they were doing when the spec'd 235 for the 17" rims.

That's very true, they must have done some serious testing to end up with that size. Perhaps I'll just keep them 235/65 and get the best tyres for every condition, I was looking at all terrain tyres for a bit of strength and durability, these wheels will only go on the car for a few months of the year.

The only thing is that they'll look pretty rubbish in comparison to the 19's which I'll be taking off but then its a case of fashion over function. Does it really matter how they look, if they do the job to the best ability that's got to be the main thing to worry about hey!

Winter tyre sizes.

Wonky look is part of the charm of winter tires. I use Dunlop GranTrek WT. Simply stunning grip. I found a complete set of four for $350 in the 235 size but 18" wheel on eBay. I've measured half of dry road braking and acceleration on slush with these tires.

I now have run on flat version of these tires giving me 500# per corner extra carrying capacity. goes along with extra strength thought.

Awesome, I'll check these out, also I think I may take a leaf out of your book with the 18's as opposed to the 17's I was going to buy.

Thanks. It’s pretty much all stock save for a Dinan strut bar and intake. 4.8iS. Oh, and those lovely winter wheels.
