Battery tender for agm battery via jump posts advised?
for example the agm mode on my ctek says 14.7V/5.0A, I do have another lower end charger that states agm setting as 14.7v/3.8A which i guess is safer but I am pretty sure I read the 14.4v max somewhere...... Having to take out battery from rear to charge it direct is safer and eliminates the risk but more than a pain in the rear (and back) so the jump posts up front seems to be the only feasible way (apart from the dc llighter socket that I dont want) Much appreciate a reply from any of the electrical gurus online and there are quite a few , BUT i am not one of em

Engine bay is perfectly fine...and that is what it is designed for.
The new generation BMWs that have an IBS (intelligent battery sensor) requires that the battery be charged from the engine bay posts...because if it isn't, it can create issues with the IBS interpreting a big change in the battery's voltage as a fault. You didn't give the model number of the CTEK charger you have...but if it is like most of the ones discussed on the forums...it has a "maintainer" feature that should stop charging the battery when it reaches a certain voltage. {I'm not an electrical guru...I know just enough to hopefully not electrocute myself...so if I misused "voltage" and should have written "current" or some other electrical term...can I have a "pass"?}

I would make a handy cable to chase via the trailer port if you have a tow package. One of the more clever tips I've read.

Ctek makes a extension cable in 2 lengths. Extension cable just hands out on the rear DS panel |

Good idea. If you don't have trailer package : you don't need to make a cable to the battery: on X5 the trunk 12v outlets are always live just use that. Put a male 12v plug on your tender and done.

I used to use the Schumacher 1.5amp maintainer in my E53 engine bay and recently upgraded to this 4 amp unit from Harbor Freight for use on my H8 size AGM battery

This unit has a specific setting for AGM batteries (as well as lead acid) and a winter setting which is user selectable. In the E53 engine bay, the unit fits nicely on the driver side (US) just ahead of the shock tower. This allows easy connection to the jumper terminals and electrical power out the front of the hood. In an AGM battery, the two gases are converted back into water: The oxygen which is created at the positive electrode during charging passes through the permeable glass fibre fleece to the negative electrode. At the negative electrode the oxygen reacts with the arriving hydrogen ions in the electrolyte to form water (oxygen cycle). In this way, the gas and thus also the electrolyte are not lost. Only in the event of an excessively heavy buildup of gas, i.e. excessively high pressure buildup (20 to 200 mbar), does the pressure relief valve discharge the gas. In this process, the pressure relief valve does not allow any oxygen in the air to enter. Because a valve regulates the pressure in the battery, the AGM battery is also known as a VRLA battery (Valve Regulated Lead Acid). Notes and instructions for service personnel It is necessary when handling an AGM battery to observe some particular points pertaining to battery changing and installation location. Charging Warning! Do not charge the AGM battery with 15.2 V. No quick-charging routines! When charging removed batteries (so-called stand-alone batteries), do not exceed the maximum charging voltage of 15.2 V at room temperature. Also when charging via the jump start terminal, do not exceed the maximum charging voltage of 15.2 V at room temperature. The AGM battery will be damaged even when it is only briefly charged with a charging voltage of more than 15.2 V. A charging voltage of more than 15.2 V is usually used in quick-charging routines. Installation location Warning! Do not install the AGM battery in the engine compartment. The AGM battery must not be installed in the engine compartment on account of the high spatial temperature differences, otherwise its service life will be significantly shortened. Housing Warning! Do not open the AGM battery. The AGM battery must not be opened under any circumstances as the introduction of oxygen from the air will cause the battery to lose its chemical equilibrium and be rendered non-operational. Battery changing Any conventional lead calcium battery can always be replaced by an AGM battery. Using an AGM battery does not require any alterations to be made to the vehicle electrical system. Note: The AGM battery is recommended for "problem customers". "Problem customers" encounter a high energy throughput through their batteries. This high energy throughput is caused by stationary loads/consumers (TV, independent heating, etc.) and a bad use profile for the battery ("chauffeur operation", short-distance driving, "stop-and-go"). The use of an AGM battery is recommended for these problem customers.

14.4. vs. 14.7.....it's not the end of the world here. All batteries like to be at a full SOC. Whether it's agm or wet cell, they still are best at full SOC. Regardless of what profile you choose on your ctek, the alternator is not going to be charging our agm at 14.7
Just swap the battery or confirm it's not your alt as part of troubleshooting |

Yup will get it done soon see how i fare with a new battery any sign of issues with slow starts i will start to look at starter swap....as both alt output is fine so is amp draw when X is off and sleeping.
