Please allow me to introduce myself... 6MTE53

Hello all,

The wife says I have too many cars. What does she know?

Picked up a '04 Toledo Blue Metallic X5 3.0i 6MT Sport. I haven't met a 3 pedal BMW I didn't like. This seller has sold other SAV's with manuals and I missed out before so I went the very next day and we agreed and I left a deposit. With the fairly low mileage and good condition I felt it was going to go to the first person who saw it. Fortunately that person was me.

Has 124k on the clock. Very impressed so far with the driving experience. Smooth and tight. I have a 57k E39 and I switched cars the other day and was shocked that the E53 felt better. Drives like a sedan.

Mechanically running excellent. I need a new LF window regulator and a RF door handle caddy.

It was a trade in by the second owner so no real maintenance history. I am going to ask my friendly SA if he can print out the history from BMW. They are not supposed to though if you ask nicely they have worked with me before.

I reviewed the owners manual the other day and was surprised to see that the transmission, transfer case and differential have no lubrication service interval. This has probably been discussed here before.

I plan on some routine maintenance and look forward to my time here. This forum is a great resource thanks to all the dedicated members.

Many miles of smiles....

Very nice! Any picture of the interior? Sports seats and wood trim?

- I have both vehicles just like you said: E39 5-series with 5spMT and 170K. The E53 X5 6spMT has 130K.

- The X5 drives like a truck in the city, so it is annoying shifting gear for this heavy truck. But on the highway, the E53 is a dream, very solid, as good as the E39.

- LF Window Regulator: you likely need the Black Clips and Slider Clips for about $10. Search forum for info.

- Door Carrier: I use BMW brand only, about $100. I wrote many DIYs, incld the door carrier, so you can search for these DIYs.

- Also...at 126K, search for my partial cooling overhaul DIY.

Yes sport seats and wood trim. The sport seats look great. The wood trim has some cracks. I can take some interior pics by the end of the week as I am out of town at the moment.

I picked the X5 up in July so I am going back a few months. Just joined so I wanted to post my experience from day one.

Changed the oil and filter in August and sent in a sample to Blackstone for analysis. I have attached the Blackstone report in PDF and JPEG. I notice higher oil consumption than I would prefer. Probably about a quart between 750-1000 miles. One E39 I have with the M54 and 200k miles uses more. I think its because of the CCV. Maybe this X5 is having the same issue.

I am fortunate that this X5 appears to have been well cared for. When this X5 needed maintenance or repair it looks like it was done. The second owner had it since 2006 and about 12k miles.

I replaced the WR last month which I will post about soon. I had some interesting issues that I had to overcome which from everything I read and watched no one else had.

I have to create a road map for routine and preventative maintenance.

Thanks again

Brad

Welcome bradb, I too am new to this forum and my X5. Just bought mine, a 2005, with 290,154 (miles) and the 3.0 auto. You can look forward to many more miles if you take care of it. Fortunatley, mine was owned by a mechanic. I too look forward to being a member, looks like lots of useful information is already here and many active and forthcoming members. Good luck and I hope you get to the mileage mine has.

Welcome, manual E53s are fairly rare.

I grew up in Roslyn, not too far from Huntington. Nice to see a fellow Long Islander on the board.

Thanks for the replies. I grew up in New Jersey and have been on Long Island for some time.

290k is incredible. A nice goal for me and mine.

I am considering replacing running gear fluids. Anyone have recommendations? I have searched on here some I probably need to search more.

Brad
