Canbus bulbs came in. They literally are like the LED A19 bulb equivalents in that they got some serious weight to them for a set of bulbs. I guess there is quite a bit of electronics in it.

The BFD feature is provided via PWM to the top lamp. LEDs cannot easily vary their brightness, although oddly enough the best way to dim LEDs is with PWM, but not quite the same system that BMW use on the OEM tails. So the after-market LED tails glow the same regardless of the PWM duty-cycle. The manufacture then has to wire them such that they are either on or off - possibly in groups to provide both tail and brake lighting behind the same lens. And the capacitors that are used to removed the "flicker" (which act as averaging devices) also screw up any chance of using BMW's PWM on after-market tails.

I'm guessing this is why there are so many after-market LED tail options for pre-facelift cars (which don't use PWM) and hardly any for facelift cars - it's just too hard for the after-market manufacturer to deal with the PWM.
Is there not a coding option for LED tails in the LCM ? Or even to be able to disable adaptive brake lights so that the tail and brake lite circuits act seperately?

Not sure, 80stech.

It's possible that the LCM could be coded to split the lamp functions or disable the BFD lighting feature but extensive searching hasn't shown up any mention of that option.

And as for a LED lamp option via coding - I very much doubt it. The PWM power/control system requires the very slow delta rate of incandescent lamps to function as designed - I cannot see the BMW engineers adding an option for LEDs (which have a VERY fast delta rate!).

I don't have LED taillights and can't be sure this would work but both coding options requested do seem to be available in NCS Expert. Again, not sure about how these functions operate, I can not validate them.

These are found in the translation.csv file in NCSDummy - and as such I'm NOT inferring that they apply to or work on any E53 - just that they may exist as options in some cases.

And this is why I've never found them before - I have always been restricting my research to the E53 chassis - when you look at all chassis type more options appear.

Which LCM do you have? Mine is a LCM C22 I don't have the blinking option like my E46. I love that option and I coded my E46 3rd brake light to flash.

Not sure which exact LCM I have... will check next time I have the laptop hooked up.

If I can get some time to look at this, I'll try hooking up an oscilloscope to the tail light circuits and play with this LED option. I would expect to see the tail and brake circuit PWM change to be a standard DC voltage level.

But I can't see it doing much beyond this as a coding change is not enough to change the tails to LED operation - there would also need to be wiring changes.

Of course, wiring changes are exactly what happens when folk install pre-LCI LED tails in LCI cars, so in this case, maybe the coding IS enough. Can't be sure though, as we don't really know BMW's intent for this coding option.

Stuff to investigate!

I just browsed through all the E53 LCM versions and unfortunately we are fairly limited on our BFD adjustability. Much like our front standing lights (halos). Scheisse...

I always save my original PSW_FSW trace files in a original trace files folder in case I ever screw up.

And all my modified trace files are saved into a current (modified) PSW_FSW trace files folder in case I ever want to see what the hell I have changed over the years...

Also makes it easy to look and see what firmware my modules are...

Circling back to this thread. Going to have to read it later with some whisky in hand.
Pre E53.

Tinkered with the switchback functions of my LED rings The rings itself are fine in native color. When I enable switchback *turns on* with the low beams on, no bueno. Drives the driver/led halo ring bonkers. Both white/amber turn on, flicker constant, etc.

However, for the brief few moments in testing with the switchbacks on with Lows Off, boy did it look awesome !

The turns are tapped to the driver of the LED Halo.
The Rings itself are independant off 12V Switched Ignition.
The rings do not play well with PWM with lows on.
