I think it is safe rule out the switch and ignition barrel, since directly jumpering the ignition switch harness with the switch disconnected (using the pins wpoll suggested) did not activate position one. What else can I look for? My only other electrical gremlin is that the steering wheel movement and memory buttons on the seat don't work, but I am sure a new seat module will fix that!
Of course, the steering wheel has to move or else you won't be able to steer the car.

What is meant by this statement? Does the steering wheel turn when it should be locked?

Sorry for the confusion, that wasn't the best choice of words!

I was referring to the steering wheel adjustment, ie. I can't move the entire steering column up/down using the stalk behind the steering wheel. My steering wheel wheel works to turn my car when driving and locks when it is meant to!

Just found this in the glovebox fuse compartment, not sure it is related but it does tell me that the PO has been messing with the electricals:

Fuse 44 is being grounded in the unused slot for Fuse 35, seems to be an attempt at bypassing the airbag light. I am a bit apprehensive about removing this wire, but what is the worst that can happen, an airbag light?

Get rid of any "jumper wires" on your system. I would guess that is where you are joining the 2 positions.

That did it. No airbag light either so I have no idea what on earth was happening there...

Thanks either way for the nudge to remove the jumper and have a Merry Christmas!
