I do like the aftermarket unit option, but that one look too aftermarket and out of place for me.

The Seicane that's in our E53 has been flawless for us. It looks about as factory as it gets and if your going from the single cd radio its pretty easy to install. Well besides the dash trimming. Any double din replacement will require the dash to be trimmed.
The radio in this pic that's in the foreground is the new Seicane aftermarket radio. The radio in the background in the factory radio I removed. Doesn't get much more factory looking than that.

Eonon 7.1 Android Head Unit 2003 X5; No DSP/NAV
I was going to post a new thread, but there are already too many threads out there on audio swaps.
I have begun to install my head unit as noted above. I'll post the specs after awhile, but they are easiest enough to find online. The frames for the audio unit are different depending on year, transmission, whether or not the system has DSP or NAV. My system is a 2003 5 speed with the business CD, no NAV. The frame is part of the dash and must be cut out. Other frames noted here can be unscrewed and extracted. Good for them. I realize just now that this forum needs dummied down resolution pics. so I will post those after I shrink the photos. What a pain. So far here is what I think. To remove the plastic frame, do not screw around. I tried several types of dremels: Battery, Electric, Air and finally I said screw it and used a BFSawZall and was able to remove the frame in seconds. Again I apologize, I will have to go and shrink the photos before I can show them to you. I will describe the wiring hook-up soon. I do not intend to install cameras. |

Post a dedicated thread. There are many "possible" or "looking to" head unit upgrade threads. There are few actual upgrade threads. Though, I am an mobile audio installer so maybe I just want to see more of that and am being selfish.

Here's a good shot of how flat the radio should be in an E39 as opposed to the Xtrons units curves: This is what that looks like in an E39 (note the curves extend beyond the dash/console): Note how much more curve is on the Xtrons unit mount (easier to see on the far edge): And this is the how the curves line up in an E53:

So they designed the curve of the face to match the e53 dash? But did not round the bottom corners to match the dash? Now that I look at the E39 dash, even that one has rounded corners. What application uses those 90 degree corners that the Chinese are manufacturing them that way? It looks absolutely terrible.
My Avin 2 was like that... I took my dremel and rounded those corners off. If I was unwilling to do that... I'd have sent it back for non-fitment.

As for the fitment, like some of the other units, there are no bottom mounting holes. The unit is designed (not well) to pressure fit at the bottom and screw in at the top. Some folks have used shims and longer top screws to offset that a bit. I have considered it, but like I said, doesn't bother me anymore.

The Avin unit gets around this by having a flat form-factor electronic section but they can do this as they have no optical drive - HUs with an optical drive need greater depth. So yeah, it would be good to have either better rear support for the electronic module or bolts at the lower front.
