2002 X5 3.0i sleep mode?

The "P" indicator on our X5 stays lighted after everything else (visible) shuts down when parked.

Problem: dead battery after 3 days of being parked; jump started car.

System charging at 14.2v at the battery.

ABS, Brakes, and yellow triangle (with circular arrow) lighted with engine on.

12.4v in the battery w/engine off.

Articles online suggest the car isn't going into sleep mode.

Code reader won't arrive until Dec. 4th.

Any help greatly appreciated.

There is a communications module that is infamous for not letting the car sleep. If you search a bit you will come across lots info info on it.

2002 X5 3.0i sleep mode?

I have a pair of 2001. Both the P light never turns off and I don't have a parasitic drain problem. The car apparently does goes into sleep as for example I can't turn on interior light until I close and re open the door once the lights are out from time delay.

The main parasitic drain is the FSU blower control you can pull the fuse or the actual FSU. Wife's caused drain even when the speeds still worked.

Telematics Control Unit (TCU) Pull fuse 74 in the back and see if the car goes to sleep after 16 minutes. It was the problem causing my parasitic drain a couple of years ago and keeping my X5 from going into sleep mode but mine is a 2004.

Yep. TCU is frequently the problem. Finally just dumped it on mine as I never used it anyway. Haven't had a parasitic drain problem since.

A thousand thanks! Your help is priceless; haven't found a svc book on the car yet.

10PM engine off voltage check at the firewall was 12.3; no change from last ck.

I'll still pull #74 tomorrow and test/explore.

Former owner left a Pioneer CD player he had hard wired into the L/R cubby; it's out! Gonna probe the wire to see if he tapped into an engine off hot wire.

Gonna change the cabin filter, the accelerator base plate, and the F P/S window reg. this weekend.

Good training.

I pulled TCU fuse #74 and road tested; ran fine, no trouble codes.

Came home, parked the car; 1.5 hours later, the park light is still on.

Reading some former threads on same topic, I seen "FSU module" mentioned.

Final Stage Unit...?

Where is that dignity-dog located.

As mentioned in post #4...they also have a 2002 e53 X5 and the orange light never goes out on his e53.

This has been discussed many times over the last decades because it appears that early model years of the e53 seem to all do this...which is not the normal operating parameters of other BMWs of the same generation.

Later model years of the e53 tend to comply with the orange gear shift light turning off after 16 minutes (my 2006 e53 does)...but again, if you search this topic...you'll read that many 2000-03 e53s orange light never turns off...and we don't know why except BMW must have designed it differently.
