Of course. The necessary device is the Android radio- or tablet- that the interface is plugged in via the USB. It runs the IBus app which does the coding. Functions pretty much like LCM coding on NCS, etc but uses a wire directly into the bus instead of going through the OBDII connector.

The more I think of this, I think it *does* read the VIN from the bus to confirm it. The IBus folks do have a SKU that is a VIN change for $5. This tells me that they have the ability to confirm it's the correct VIN and assign it to the app plugged into that VIN.

But just to get the process started, you don't need the app or device plugged in. Submit the VIN and await the activation email. Once you have it, I *believe* the app and device will need to be plugged in to read and confirm the VIN matches. That will activate the full app and you can code away.

The interface would need to see the ignition switch and respond with sending the right signal to the LCM so I think that a device would be needed, not just the interface.
Yeah, my post was not really clear. I should have said interface and app. The interface is the vehicle into the IBus and the app does the coding. Sorry for the confusion..

Yeah, the more I think of it it is the only way to validate the app is being used by the appropriate car/license keeping someone with these 2 tools from running around coding everybody's cars.

Did you find out anything on the Europe/Denmark settings? I went out to the X again and coded it both ways with NCS and still nothing.

*EDIT* I even went out and tried again with both selected at the same time and zip, still nothing...

I *did*! And it looks like we have a pair of the app and device working together in a way I had not remembered.

Coding the LCM is the same as it is anywhere cause, well, it can only do what it do. To code the LCM through the IBus app, just select it under the menu, 'Coding'.

Here is where I have turned off the sidelights. Easy as you mentioned before.
This is the menu set where I can choose ECE or Denmark for DRLs, too. I don't know what happens to the side lights when these are selected, but they certainly do *not* simply leave the halos burning. The HIDs were active with both.
So, how then I wondered, am I getting what I want out of these halos?

Annnnd THERE it is! I noticed that as soon as I changed the LCM options, my halos would go dark! Even when I turned Denmark and ECE *off* for DRLs, the halos wouldn't come back!

Until they did. Yeah. When I re-launched the IBus *app* after playing with LCM coding, those lil halos would shine right up! Annnnd where in the hell is *that* coming from? You guessed it. Settings that are maintained by the app, not the LCM.
All of this brought back a frustration I had this summer. Lots of times, The app would 'go to sleep' with the radio. Even though I'd selected for it to run at startup, it wouldn't. I was left to manually restart the IBus app each time the radio went to sleep. I usually forgot and didn't realize it until I'd get out for a pic of the X5 at some landmark on our road trip. The fogs and halos would be dark for the pic.

Frustrated, I wrote to the guys at IBus. They said, oh! Just select 'Automatic' on the radio for the duration to sleep. The radio will only pull a small bit over night and you should be good. I made that change and it worked! The IBus app would fire up automatically as would my desired DRL combo.

Soo, this long story tells us whut?

This story tells *me* that in order for the DRLs to take on settings from the IBus app (rather than coded by the LCM), the IBus app *must* be running and connected to the X5 bus! So, if you want to use a tablet to code the LCM, you sure can. *But* if you want your halos, DRLs, or others to be on with ignition, IBus needs to tell your bus at *each* startup.

If you had a cheap enough tablet that you could power and squirrel away in your trunk, this may be the next iteration of the path forward.

Like I said, the app is putting the signal on the Ibus with the ignition switch and not actually coding the LCM to do this.

I didn't see anyone disagree. So good on you!

Well there it is. Damn it. Now I'm back to hoping Svet and his ModLight2 will accommodate me and add the menu item. Or as you say, just some sort of android device running in the background.

Defeat is such an ugly word...

Thanks again for your help and answering all my questions PH. It sure shines a better light on things. I love this family.

So glad I ordered Resler's Ibus interface for my radio install. It's sitting here in the pile of audio equipment waiting to go in... sometime this decade I hope.

Can't wait to start playing with this.

Anybody into Arduino? If you don't want to use a relay would be pretty cool to make your own interface into the Ibus!
