It seems those Webasto parts are not listed on US versions. Not sure if it was available on E38/E39 US versions.

I saw that too. I also noticed that the e38 has a different inlet/outlet arrangement. And the e39 comes with both petrol and diesel (same inlet/outlet by the looks of it).

So yesterday I was looking for the wiring loom/harness, it seems that US/CA cars are not pre-wired for this unit, which is a huge let down.

I might be looking in the wrong are, I was looking in the drivers side cowl. I did not see any wires tucked away or anything.

I would attempt this retrofit on E53 gasoline engine, but I wonder it all the parts are even available still.

Something like this might be a good start...

That's a Thermo Top Evo. Surely never installed as original on E53.

No, I doubt it ever was!

But it might be a good source of parts to start a retro-fit - unless the controller is not able to be interfaced?

Perhaps a Thermo Top C or Z might be easier, as suggested by alex_j...

If you want original style then Thermo Top Z/C is the only choice with K-bus control. Thermo Top V and Evo have their own W-bus control which E53 modules can't handle.

If you don't want/need to integrate the heater into the car's system, you can run the heater via a standalone w-bus controller: -

https://www.orbbasto.karadev.net/wbus_en.htm

This same supplier also has a GSM remote for the Webasto heaters - although as 3G is being shut down the world over it maybe not be very useful in the future: -
