Update to my post.... my memory isn’t what it used to be! Here’s exactly what I use.

Nice.

I remembered I have a set of tiny box wrenches. I’ll try that also. All I need is too loosen it a bit.

But it’s still raining.....more coming.

Offset ratchet screw driver if it's slotted. If not slotted: add slot with Dremel.

Pretty much what I ended up doing. Much easier than trying to fidget with a flathead around all the hoses. They are a 6mm.

Finally got it out. Cut the smaller tube out, had a tear all ready so no loss. The brake vaccum hose sits on a bracket and was in the way of both 6mm bolts on the bands. Was able to get the brake booster line bracket out one t27 screw. Move it out of the way and pretty easy to get a 6mm socket on it.

Bad news is my ICV doesn’t rattle so probably need a replacement.

It's really amazing oversight that BMW installed those where they can't be serviced from the topside!

In process I resorted to more colorful descriptions but oversight is good as any. My 6mm deep socket and stubby extension are still missing after dropping into the abyss. Was hoping not to have to crawl under until I need the exhaust out....

Most items dropped into X5 motor compartment will rest safely on the foam on top of the stiffening plate under the motor until retrieved. The form is kinda "egg crate" and will hold round stuff for months or years. With light and a mirror you can very likely find if you remove the tire on the closest side.

Thanks.
I had my magnet on it as it dropped off as I was pulled it up. Never to be seen again....until I crawl under.

Left myself stickie note reminder.

So far, not terribly hard. I did encounter two small vaccum hose not connected to anything. One is connected to the dipstick mounting bracket sort of a downward facing hook, stiff plastic. Maybe a vent? Hmm.

Other has a 90 degree, same stiff plastic, sorta points at the purge valve. Don’t think I dislodged either. If I did they were poorly seated.

Guess Bentley has a vacuum diagram I can cross-check.
