I need to check for continuity to eliminate the harness as suggested, I need to find out the best way to do that?

Thanks for the help Guys.
You need to disconnect the coil & the DME. Then using a pinout diagram of the wiring harness check each wire individually from the coil to the DME. Obviously you need a meter that is functioning properly or this time will be wasted. Example, touching the probes together should NOT give a reading of -.2. If all that checks ok, Id vote on a bad DME

Was the #3 mis fire the only code before the codes were erased? Is this checking with a BMW proprietary scanner or OBD2 generic?

I wouldn't expect an O2 sensor or DME issue would be limited to one cylinder. I think you have followed a good troubleshooting path. Assuming valid tests it does sound like a wiring issue. Any other symptoms? Check engine light on?

Both before and after on the misfire 4 different times.
I have two code readers, one with live data.
No BMW proprietary scanner was used.

What happens is when I clear the misfire code and start the car #3 injector works for 15 or 30 seconds then the DME turns it off which is normal when it detects a misfire, I think. This happens the same time the check engine light comes back on.

I cant recommend a proprietary BMW scanner enough. You will have a lot more diagnostic abilities & power. Often codes unseen by other scanners. There are countless threads on here about the cheapest & best ones. Personally Id start there before I went through the trouble of checking the wires, but that decision is up to you.

Correct this would be normal operation. It will also set a code stating it has done so.

I may have been wrong, both scanners are for only BMW autos one I got from Bavarian autosport 10 years ago it is round with a 2 digit display and 2 buttons. the other one is new and has more capabilities like live data. I thought you were talking about the ones the dealers used.

What is the best scanner is like debating what is the best oil. There is a current thread discussing scanners that might be helpful to you.

How long after you have cleared the code and start the engine does it take for the check engine light to come on?
