heated seats wierd problem

The latest X5 I bought has heated seats. The lights work perfect turning either the driver or passenger seat heater on.

The problem is they never get hot. Either side.

I googled this one for awhile and couldn't find anyone having the exact same issue.

Again the lights go to 3 bars when you turn them on and then two and one with repeated pressing of the switch till they are back off again. So the car thinks everything is working great they just don't heat up. If it was just one side I would think elements but both sides?

I had that and it was the alternator.

It wouldn't be a stretch at all to have both seat elements burnt out if you don't assume that the previous owner had each replaced when they did burn out. It might be harder to tell but do seat backs get warm?

If it has heated steering wheel, does that work? All three went off when my alternator was bad. It’s like the can goes into self preservation mode and saves its electricity for critical functions like ignition or something.

Obviously could be other things, like the seat elements, wiring to them, but probably not fuses I think.

It doesn't have a heated steering wheel and no parts of either of the seats gets warm. That's what is so strange with it.

@14thbmw, when this happened did the heated seat indicator lights come on?

The vin decodes as having them. The seat heater lights are in dash and work normally. So the car "thinks" it has heated seats. Now someone could of swapped out both of the front seats to non heated seats but what are the odds?

I'll dive into this tomorrow fully just was curious if anyone had seen anything like this before.

All of the failed seat heaters I have run across turn themselves off when you try to turn the switch on as in the lights come on then turn off on their own. These don't do that. They stay at whatever setting you set them to just like everything is working normally as far as the car is concerned. But the seats just don't get hot. In fact if you disconnect the seats aka if they were swapped non heated seats the built in relay stuff will turn the seats off after a second or so. These are not doing that.
