06 N62 E53 keeps eating drive belts

I can't figure out what is going on. I've put two new drive belts on and it started to eat them within about a minute.

I'm using a 6PK1550, with an air cooled alternator. I've just replaced the idlers thinking these were causing me the pain. Do I have the wrong sized belt fitted?

Your belt is 2mm too long it looks like... or mine is 2mm too short. This is what I ordered: 6PK1548.

I've got an M54. But I would remove the belt and carefully inspect all the pulleys for cracking or debris stuck in the ribs / grooves. Especially on a plastic / composite pulley - maybe it has cracked due to age + heat.

Regarding belt size, I expect you'd know if it was off when you installed it, so that's not likely to be the problem.

Also, clarification - 2 new belts on at the same time (one drive belt, one AC belt), and both got eaten at the same time? Or something else, like you had two drive belts eaten in succession?

EDIT - and 2mm long or short will not be causing instant destruction here.

EDIT - also, what other work was done related to this. You mention replacing idlers after you had this problem. Anything before it showed up? Of course, having one of the pulleys significantly misaligned could cause problems. And I'm assuming that of course all the pulleys spin freely? The harmonic balancer (crank pulley) is tough to check there, but it actually does fail sometimes - the rubber damping material in there fails, letting the crank pulley wobble. So you can check for that visually, running it with no belt installed and observing any wobble.

Out of curiosity, I checked on the 6pk1550. FCPeuro doesn't even sell it apparently so I googled it. Amazon DOES report it as fitting the N62 in our trucks. Not sure why. FCP Euro shows the 6pk1548 for the E53 N62.

I can't imagine the extra 2mm making a big difference with the spring loaded tensioner, but maybe it does have an arch while running.

I've basically overhauled the Truck. It was used as a company vehicle and serviced by an indie that really didn't know much about much.

So i've done
Coil Packs
Plugs
Valve Stem Seals
Gaskets
Fuel Pump and Filter
Heater hoses
Water Pump and Thermostat.

When I took the skid plate off there was some curled up bands of drive belt. I have a 6pk1548 that I took off at the start of the job with one rib missing that seems to run fine. I used it to idle the car for about 45 mins bleeding the cooling system today.

I ate one 6pk1550 with about 2 mins of run time, and figured the failure was due to a bad idler wheel on the alt. Replaced idlers and got another 6pk1550 in. This one lasted just about an 1/8th of a mile and back. The AC drive belt is happy, so I'm thinking the crank pulley isn't wobbling, will inspect surfaces of other pulleys for wobble / knarling obstruction as suggested right now.

Thanks!

There is an adjuster screw on top of the power steering pump I think that may fine tune the angle of the end pulley of the serpentine belt. There's very little clearance so small alignment could cause it to rub.

Make sure all pulleys and accessories turn smoothly before you put the belt on. Very recently an xoutpost member had a frozen bearing on a new idler pulley and it melted pretty quick and self destructed and tore up the belt.

Best I could tell there is some light chipping on the front face of the water pump pulley. The belts are coming apart from the front, my guess is this is the culprit.

Light chipping would likely translate to "serrated blade" at speed.

You know, I was hunting for this the other night when I was installing the PS pump and pouring over the schematics for it, in regard to a high pressure line bracket and this issue. The pump on this truck is the same as the 4.8 model, which doesn't have an adjustment angle.

N62 ps has no adjustment. It actually fits inside a groove and sorta locks in place and just one nut on right and a bolt on left.

Even before you tighten it the is no slack.
