Question or two: the air manifold is the straight bar on top of the intake?

Thanks for the oilf pan tip. Need to check the dipstick housing also. Too damn cold today though.

Yep, the manifold is a long bar that has a nipple in each intake runner, on top of the manifold.

@ Oldmactech. I lived in Atlanta - I miss the mild winters but not the summers. Aside the CCV, the car also might have differed maintenance or use of cheap oil. A better oil (Motul, Amsoil European blend 5W30 or 5W40) can also deal with some of the condensation better but the CCV and short trips are the root causes.

I have an M57 diesel E53, BMW developed a better vortex breather - easy to retrofit, which I did.

Depending on oil consumption - with the M54 I'd install this:

Anyone using this GAS kit. As usual their products look nice.

Search for the infamous thread "BavarianE39 CCV Mod".

I posted my CCV Mod photos in there.
This mod will fix all these problems (oil consumption etc. etc.).

I replaced my breather with the newer vortex type too - after reading much advice about it.

But it turns out that the vortex type breather may not be "better".

I've recently read that the vortex type was developed by BMW to stop the service claims they were receiving at the time. The vortex type doesn't clog like the filter version did, therefore it won't need servicing but apparently it doesn't remove as much oil as the filter type. The filter is much more efficient - which leads to it clogging.

In retrospect, the best (performance) solution is to use the filter type breather but change it regularly, say every second or third oil change. That could get spendy...
