Harbor freight had fiberglass rods that I used to fish the wire down the walls. I now have 20 amps to the front of my garage. Time to get welding!

I picked up a nice Swagman Semi 4.0 hitch mount bike rack today (off Craigslist). My boys and I all ride XL or XXL frames, and only two wheel-mount hitch racks accomodate such long wheelbases - this Swagman Semi and the newest Thule T2 Pro XT. The Thule is nicer, but also more expensive. This Swagman was in nice shape and I saved about $280 off buying new. I carried my bikes on the roof on my 328i, but the X5 is just too tall (and I'm getting old!).

Finally changed the engine oil. I had put a qt. of Marvel Mystery Oil in there for about 100 miles to help do a little internal cleaning. Glad to have that old, nasty stuff out of my engine and now it's full of light golden Castrol Edge 0W-40.

The used ebay ballast showed up, but didn't work initially (at least the light didn't light). Since I have two complete sets of lights, I started doing all sorts of swapping. There's no rhyme or reason to when the lights work or when they don't. Weird. I'm getting tired of fighting them. The new junkyard lights seem to work perfectly, so maybe I should just put my new bulbs in them and not bother trying to get the original lights to work.

I manufactured the bumper mount brackets to go with the trailer hitch. I found a piece at Tractor Supply that I could cut in half and make two brackets. The holes were even in the right spots! The square tubing was a piece of scrap I had on hand from a broken lift for our camper. I still need to weld the M10x130 bolts in place so they don't spin when tightening. Then I have to cut out the bracing on the stock bumper carrier to fit the trailer hitch. That doesn't look fun.

Headlights haven't missed a beat, so I'm thinking I'll be able to get both bumpers mounted soon and quit looking so ghetto!

I seem to have my headlight gremlins solved. Original headlights have been working perfectly for over a week, so they're going on ebay soon. The headlights I got from the junkyard are on now (as-is). Front bumper reinstalled. I will take it back apart later this spring when I'm ready to do some painting so I can use 2K clear to coat the headlights for a longer lasting finish.

Did a second drain/fill of the AT. Still pretty nasty looking, so I'll do a third drain/fill soon. I'm using MaxLife trans fluid. I looked up the viscosity and it's actually a tiny bit LIGHTER viscosity than Dex VI. I swear I looked that up a year or two ago and it was noticeably heavier viscosity than Dex VI. I'm not so sure that's what I really want in there now. Either I am remembering wrong or they've changed the blend to a lighter viscosity. Argggghhhh.

I primed/painted the trailer hitch bumper mounts that I manufactured.

I then started working on modifying the bumper carrier to fit the trailer hitch. I'm using my pneumatic die grinder with 1/16" thick cutoff wheels. So far, that seems to be working great. I've got all the welds cut on the inside of the carrier, but I ran out of wheels. I still have about 6 welds to cut on the outside of the carrier and it should separate all the bracing material from the carrier.

I'm getting really close to being done with all the heavy mechanical work. Then it will be time to start on figuring out my radio situation. Electronics are not my strong suit, but I'm fortunate to have a good friend who is a Ph.D in electrical engineering. If only I understood what he is trying to tell me!

I finally succeeded in freeing all the bracing from inside the bumper carrier. That was a significant pain. If I had to do that again, I might skip it and pay the $250 or whatever it costs to just buy the carrier. I wanted to finish up and get the rear bumper installed, but the temp was dropping into the 20's and i needed to prime/paint the carrier where it had been ground/cut/mutilated.

Put my original headlights on ebay and one is already sold. That sale will cover about 75% of all my junkyard purchases. I'll soon be in the black!

I ordered new high beam bulbs as one was bad on the junkyard lights. Also, someone had removed the halo bulbs, so I ordered the 7W LED halo kit.

Cold weather heading our way, so won't accomplish much this coming week.

I actually looked into buying that X5. The day I was going to look at it you must have beat me to it! I ended up buying an '06. I just got an Xtron Radio running Windows CE that I am probably going to send back. Let me know if your interested in it. If not, I'm sending it back to exchange for an Android version.

Small world! I hope you found one you like. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do as far as a radio. I don't really want to spend much, as I probably listen to AM radio more than I listen to music. I think my first efforts will be toward trying to get the existing system to work.

How are you liking your 06?

AM.
