That's the Teflon and graphite. I use it on door hinges. Lasts a long time.

Bingo. Spray right on the danger zone through the DHC screw hole.

Ha, I use a variation of that ... strip a 12in length of 12gauge Romex conductor insulation and it fits over the straw. Tape the bare copper wire to it and use that to "steer" the straw.

Good information. I broke my rear driver side DHC a couple of weeks ago. It had gotten up to 21 degrees, Yup that’s when everyone here starts wearing flip flops and washing cars, so I washed the car one afternoon. Went out the next morning at -15 and without thinking pulled the door handle. It snapped immediately. A little forethought and a minute with a heat gun would have prevented that. However, if it’s just the door seal that’s frozen, you can usually carefully lift the handle, then reach up to the top of the door and pull from the door frame rather than pulling with the handle. I always open my doors by gently unlatching with one hand, then pulling with the frame, not the handle. Crazy to have to do that, but it puts a lot less stress on the handle with every opening.

The handle can take plenty of force unless the self destruct button is engaged. The other problem also will cause enough of a bind it can break the DHC but when sprayed with some water repellant it should never freeze again.
To prevent the door seal freezing spray some deicer on it when it's wet and you expect the temp to drop below freezing. Works perfectly

I recommend TW25b if you start with a clean surface. It holds up to crazy temps and if it gets too gunky it'll dry up and flake off like candle wax. I've run it on a 240b in the White mountains at -20f and been able to go cyclic till cherry red then back to frozen then cherry red multiple times.

I’ve always sprayed my door seals with silicone a couple times during the winter on all our vehicles. Any of them will freeze shut, not just the BMW. Your spray sounds better. But, here, it generally gets cold and stays cold for a few months, so we don’t have the wet and then freeze thing as much.
The first dhc I broke was on the drivers door. It was in the summer, and the door had not been locked. In fact the drivers window was down and I was getting gas. It just broke. My understanding was just that these things have really heavy doors, and cheap garbage carriers that break. That’s why I don’t pull the door open with the handle pulled up. Is that incorrect? Many of the stories here seem to be about rain or water getting in and freezing the latch, then freezing when the door is locked. We don’t need to lock the doors at night and rarely do unless traveling. Will removing the SD tab help in other situations? If my door is not locked, but the latch freezes, does it matter if the SD tab is there or not? I’m asking because I have a new carrier sitting here waiting to go in and I’m wondering if I should cut that tab off.

Can you explain why not to spray a lubricant in the access hole?Someone else suggested it, I have done it and all seems good. We are getting another cold spell next week, so that will be the next test. THanks
