4x4 / DSC light - can anyone help?

Hi folks

I am a newbie here, looking for a bit of assistance and guidance on the 4x4 / DSC light issue – which I understand from hunting around the forum is a common problem.

I have a BMW X5 E53 3.0 Diesel, 2004, that I love to bits, and I would like to try and keep running for as long as possible. It has done around 124k miles, and I have had it for about 5 years – in which time it has been absolutely faultless.

Until now that is, as I now have the 4x4 / DSC light showing.

Might be coincidence – but this happened immediately after picking the car up from having a new stereo unit and retro-fitted heated seat installed. Maybe fiddling around with the electrics caused the issue?

The steering wheel lock-to-lock trick worked once or twice.

I have a basic code reader, through which I have erased error codes a couple of times which occasionally clears the light – but it will come back on, and the error codes come back too. The error codes I get are:

5F1E – Wheel speed sensor, front right (air gap)…this one comes and goes
5EB0 – Steering-angle sensor, internal…this one seems to come back every time

I’m guessing it’s those two things that are causing the issue, and that I should head to a BMW independent to get it sorted.

A couple of other things of note…

BATTERY – multimeter shows a reading of around 11.9 volts when engine is off, and 14.0 volts when running. I understand that some electrical gremlins are caused by battery problems – however I have had no problems with starting the car, even after leaving it for a couple of weeks. That said, I have not had the battery changed in 5 years and it could well be running on the original.

ACTUATOR CASE / TRANSFER GEAR – I can’t hear any clicking, so I don’t think it can be that.

As above, I suspect I should head to an indy to get it sorted…but if anyone has any comments, thoughts or guidance that would be very welcome!

Many thanks!

Your voltage is low and that could have set off everything (they left doors/interior lights on) plus you need to see about that steering angle sensor. But if you have 5 years on that battery you should pony up for one now anyway.

Without good voltage the rest is just throwing parts at it.

When my battery was weak after having work done with doors open and lights on, I got the 4X4 light and when checked with my NT510 I got the steering angle sensor fault. A good charging of the battery solved that problem, but my battery is less than two years old. I'd go with the battery first. BUT, there are many on here who know more than I. See what else is suggested here, I'm sure an expert will jump in soon.

So, a bit of an update...

I replaced the battery. Much easier starting and needed doing anyway, but has not helped with the 4x4 light.

So, to address the fault codes....

5F1E – Wheel speed sensor, front right (air gap)…this one comes and goes
5EB0 – Steering-angle sensor, internal…this one seems to come back every time

My mechanic replaced both the wheel speed sensor and the steering angle sensor.

However, the 4x4 light is still with us, so I'm somewhat bemused...

This is the error code I'm getting now:

5EB2 - Steering angle sensor adjustment

If anyone has any thoughts, please let me know!!

Sounds like you just need to calibrate the new steering sensor. It will take software so if your indy has it have him do it. If not run by the dealer and have them do it for you.

You can calibrate it yourself simply by turning from lock to lock a couple times with key in position 2 (engine running or not, I believe). However, a new LEW module (a.k.a. steering angle sensor) must be coded to the particular vehicle for some unknown reason. It can be done in Progman and probably other coding-capable softwares.

It sounds like a coding issue. When I changed my SAS I had to take it to my indy and have him code it because I didn't have the right scanner to do it at the time. The Foxwell and Schwaben scanners will code and calibrate the SAS.
