Overboost, do you mean part # 4 or # 7 in this diagram? RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog

I’ve visually inspected - I am 100% sure the upper bolt is on, but I can’t see the lower.

I’ll check it out when I jack it up next week. Work was done by a reputable shop - I think (hope) they wouldn’t miss something so basic. But to err is human I suppose!

The mistakes I read about were made on part #2 (u-joint) upper or lower pinch point. You should be able to see it from opening the hood and looking on the left side of the engine bay. Have a helper move the steering wheel back and forth while you look at the joint.

Some interesting developments.

I jacked both wheels clear off the ground and grabbed onto the front wheels at 9 and 3 o'clock - gave it a violent shaking. No banging / creaking / knocking sound at all. Repeated test on both sides - no noises.

Then I loosened the E10 torx screw that holds the double universal joint on (you will need a few extensions to get it to fit properly) took out the steering column universal joint in hopes that I could bench test this joint and sure enough, it has play and is making a clicking sound. It's not quite as violent as is heard/felt, but that may just be a function of the various steering components amplifying the sounds. It doesn't ALWAYS seem to have play/make the knocking sound - just in some specific positions.

I have a feeling this issue is an amalgamation of a few worn out components.

Replacement ordered from pelican, I will report back once fitted.

Additionally, wouldn't play in the lower control arms / ball joints be quite obvious? The inspection sheet says there is play but no matter how hard I grab and shake these I can't get them to move. Also, all the boots look brand new as well, nothing obviously wrong.

I found this video on the tube last night. This is the EXACT noise mine is making: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwT1_Lv9fz4

It’s not really loud. The cabin in this thing is amazing well insulated.

It’s felt as a click along multiple points of the steering.

If you watch the video - those are exactly my symptoms.

Barely heard from within the cabin, but sounds like a loud bang when you’re outside.

I have that exact problem/noise. Will be doing the upper u-joint soon apparently. I'm at just over 118,000 miles for reference.

Exclamation

Damn. I replaced the upper universal steering joint - there is some improvement in steering feel but the core issue is still there.

Can someone have a look at this video and see if they recognise this noise.

Before changing the shaft:

After changing the shaft:

Getting under the car, its very hard to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. The noise/vibration travels, and everything is vibrating. It's not at all obvious.

Edit - I just tried the same steering movements on my friends' Golf GTI - it also does it (electric PS on his one). My 135i also does it.

Check that (shaft holder?) that's just above the joint where it punches thru the firewall and see if the rubber is shot or conversely check the rack to make sure it doesn't have cracked or loose fittings. #7-#8

inner shaft connection under the boot

My rack was shit so I pulled it out and had the teeth lightly milled and then adjusted the lash over here some parts are harder to get than Jack Daniels and ham sandwiches.

Noise wise Ive only had two clunking noise situations but they it wasn't on one of our x5's.

The e46 was sway bar end links.

The e39 which has similar front end linkage was the control arms going from the frame to the wheel.

The steering rack issues on the e46 was binding more than noise stuff.

rather than try to find the noise; try to find the slop in the motion. Something is not moving when the steering wheel moves; have somebody move the steering wheel back and forth w/o making any noise and track down where there is a moving vs. non-moving part. Based on some of the comments above odds are good it's in the rack, but could be at the output of the steering; the ball joints that go to the tie rods will easily make that noise if they wear out.

if you track it down to a suspected ball joint, you can likely wrap it super-tight with tape; i used electrical tape to eliminate the clunk; on the anti-sway bar links they will tap like morse code when they wear out, wrap in electrical tape they get pre-loaded and won't wobble; it's a fix that lasts for weeks in that case.
