Thanks for the PSA.

I followed that link to the NHTSA, copied in my VIN and got this:
"Jan 14,2019
Manufacturer Recall NumberNA
NHTSA Recall Number19V015
Recall StatusRecall Incomplete
Summary
DRIVER'S FRONT AIR BAG: This recall campaign involves the Takata PSDI-4 inflator which entered the spare parts supply chain, and may have been installed in vehicles with sport steering wheels at dealers during service visits. During air bag deployment in an accident, the driver's front air bag module may produce excessive internal pressure that could cause the inflator to rupture."

So at first read, it looks like I need to take it in. But reading a little more slowly ...
"... spare parts supply chain, and may have been installed in vehicles with sport steering wheels at dealers during service visits"

I don't have a sport steering wheel, so I'm not affected.

And this seems to say that even if I did have a 3-spoke sport wheel, unless the airbag was replaced during a service visit, I'm not affected.

Right?

My 9/2002 build VIN is on the airbag recall list also.

Wish they would give me a new steering wheel too....

FYI: Just talked with BMW service dept and if your VIN is listed then you need to make the appointment. Applies to either style steering wheel from what I was informed.

Same here. Part is in stock and appointment is set. And they need to give me a loaner. Nice!

Just got back from my airbag recall appointment.

The dealer performed an "inspection" and found that my airbag in the "standard" steering wheel was not among those affected by the shrapnel creating airbags.

Service advisor says that the airbags with the yellow sticker are the ones that can create shrapnel and potentially shred your jugular and cause you to bleed out.

If your VIN is on that NHTSA recall list, I encourage you to go get your bag checked ASAP!

I took mine in yesterday. They determined from the serial on the airbag that it was not a danger. So they didnt replace it.

The X3 loaner car they gave me was unremarkable.

Going to drop mine off on Thursday for the replacement -- test drive some new goodies while I wait.

Sorry to hear that. I'm pretty sure that neither the NHTSA nor BMW values my time as much as I do. That's why I posted up above in post #11.

My read (and by that I mean my conclusion from actually carefully reading the words in the VIN report) on it is that unless you have a sport steering wheel (I don't) AND you had the airbag in it replaced (I did not even have my non-sport airbag replaced), you will not need replacement.

So I'll probably wait until I'm in at the dealer for something else, which is likely to be never.

I got no direct confirmation following my post, but each reported experience in this thread seems to indirectly confirm it.

If anyone ever has an experience to contradict this interpretation, please post it.
