I don't have a sport steering wheel, so I'm not affected.

And this seems to say that even if I did have a 3-spoke sport wheel, unless the airbag was replaced during a service visit, I'm not affected.

Right?
That is correct...and this has been discussed and mentioned many times before...going back a couple of years when the Takata air bag debacle was first coming to light.

See a post from two years ago on this forum that indicates that it is the SPORT STEERING WHEEL that is affected for the e53 X5 (take note of the asterisk and what it says as to which steering wheel is affected):

BMW

Which cars are under recall? BMW confirmed on April 10, 2015, that a range of 3 Series models are under national recall, including 2000-2005 sedans, 2000-2006 coupes, 2000-2006 convertibles, 2000-2005 wagons, 2001-2006 M3 coupes and 2001-2006 M3 convertibles.
On May 28, 2015, BMW added the 2002-2003 5 Series sedan (including the M5) and wagon plus the 2003-2004 X5 SUV, but only models with the optional sport steering wheel are affected.
On Jan. 22, 2016, NHTSA said its latest expansion would include BMW, and the automaker responded Feb. 10 with a large batch of new recalls: the 2008-2013 1 Series coupe and convertible, 2006-2011 3 Series sedan, 2006-2012 3 Series wagon and 2007-2013 3 Series coupe and convertible, plus a lot of SUVs: the 2013-2015 X1, 2007-2010 X3, 2007-2013 X5 and 2008-2014 X6.
On June 2, 2016, BMW added several model years for passenger-side airbags. They are the 2007-2011 BMW X5 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive48i, xDrive50i and X5M; 2009-2011 BMW X5 xDrive35d; 2008-2011 BMW X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i and X6M; and 2010-2011 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid. BMW is recalling the cars based on how humid it is where you live, but NHTSA plans to expand the recall to eventually become national. If you see your car listed above, it'll likely become recalled at some point regardless of location.
BMW expanded the recall in January 2017 to include certain variants of the 2001 5 Series sedan (including the M5) and wagon plus the 2001-2002 X5. (Many of the expansion-covered models already are under recall as automakers expand the scope or geographic region of recalls within a given model year, add different inflators or recall replacement inflators.)
Which airbag inflators in those cars are under recall? It depends on the particular car, but BMW has recalled inflators in driver-side airbags, passenger-side airbags or both for given vehicles. In some cases, the replacement airbags — those installed after a crash where the original airbag deployed — are Takata units even though the original ones weren’t. Check with your dealer for specifics on your car.

QSilver, it was only the sport steering wheels which were recalled until last month.

The takata airbag recall has been going in phases. The most dangerous inflators were replaced first. The less dangerous ones were replaced gradually as they are manufactured. I mean, the recall has covered over 50 million airbags, so it's not like they can just pop those out in a quick recall.

My non sport model was not on the list until January. I checked many times over the past several years. But, like others, the dealer checked the serial and determined it did not need replacing.

Well...I humbly stand corrected. Thanks for the update.

I'm still not completely sure, but it looks like things are changing.

I have a 2001 3.0i with a non-sport steering wheel, still with its original airbag, as far as I know.

2 weeks ago (reported in post #11), I went to the NHTSA link and was told I had one recall associated with my VIN ... the airbag one. Seems like I needed to take it in. But upon reading the text on that NHTSA page, it said (exact copy and paste in post #11) that (my paraphrasing follows) I might have a bad airbag if 1. I had a sport steering wheel, AND 2. its airbag was installed by a dealer at a service visit.

Since neither of those is true, my conclusion is that NHTSA and BMW worry more about covering their asses and don't care at all about wasting my time. I figured I'd follow this thread to see if reports are confirming that. And so far it looks like they are.

Just now, I checked the page again, and it has updated. Here's the new copy and pasted text from the section that is different:
"Summary
DRIVER'S FRONT AIR BAG: This vehicle may have received a Takata inflator (PDSI-4) if the steering wheel was previously replaced. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's air bag, excessive internal pressure could cause the air bag to explode."

The biggest difference is the "This vehicle may have received" bit. Much less definitive than the first version conveys. Seems like they're making it even clearer that my interpretation is probably accurate, but still covering themselves by telling everyone to head on in.

I can understand why - some people may not know if a PO had the airbag replaced, so telling everyone to come in is safer. And many people don't know what the sport steering wheel is, so maybe that's why they dropped that.

Got the recall for my 02 X5 that I've only had for about a year and have no history on.Called the closest dealer(1/2 hour away)and made an app.right away.Had to cancel first app. and re-booked for 2 weeks later.Girl was nice about the whole thing even though the car had never been there.Get another call an hour later and all of a sudden the airbags are back ordered.Sounds sketchy to me.

I wouldn't look at it that way because the TAKATA air bag debacle is MASSIVE and has affected multiple car manufacuturers for multiple years.

I'd be grateful that they contacted me BEFORE taking off work or making other arrangements to bring the vehicle in...to then find out that you did all that and they can't work on your vehicle because they don't have the parts.

Since they have your info and they contacted you due to lack of parts in the system...I'm sure they will notify you when parts are available and you can get back in.

Good luck...again, I wouldn't take this as sketchy but them being pro active in not pissing off a customer.

BTW, you can see in the pic below (from 2015) how many BMWs were affected at that time...let alone all the other car mfgs that are affected world wide. And since then, even more vehicles have been added to the recall:

I got a letter a few days ago, dated simply "March 2019" that basically seems to be confirming my previous suspicions in posts #11 and #24 about just how important (or not) this recall is.

The letter says it is for 2000-2004 5 Series and X5.

Says the problem is if you have a Takata airbag - seems like that's the only thing to check. If Takata = a problem, will be replaced. Not Takata = no problem, carry on.

It has the following exact text, including the bold and underlining:

"Your vehicle may have received a Takata inflator if the steering wheel was previously replaced."

It implies that unless you had your steering wheel replaced, there is no chance of having a Takata bag in there, and nothing to worry about. And it seems there's a chance that even it was previously replaced, it may have been with a non-Takata bag, and there would be nothing to worry about.

Previous notices referred to also requiring the Sport steering wheel to be at risk. This latest letter does not mention that at all.

I can see why in the interest of being as safe as possible that they tell everyone to come in, considering that not everyone knows whether their steering wheel was ever replaced. And others may not know what a sport steering wheel is. The PO of my X5 though it had the sport package since it has 19" wheels, for example.

If I were to ever have my X5 at the dealer for some other reason, I'd get it checked, but am not feeling any urgency to get it in there just for this. I know I don't have a sport steering wheel, and I'm pretty sure that based on all the records that no airbags have ever gone off or been replaced.

My 2002 was affected by this...and if you've received actual mail about it like many of us have... I would call to verify. Even if it has been replaced before hand. Better safe than sorry.
Also I would imagine that any airbag swap would show up on your car history report if you want to add it to your carfax account.
