Center Console Cubby Top Tray?

Hmmm

Okay folks. Possibly the dumbest question of the year here.

In my 4.8is auto. I have the Center Console that has the arm rest that can be raised in two parts:

1) the very top part when lifted presents me with a black tray that has three or four channels that look like they are pen holders? What exactly are they supposed to be for? I just fill em up with coins and pens. But I am intrigued as to their correct use ;if there is one)

There is no wiring so no phone etc.

2) under this we have the main deep cube box which is just a deep storage box.

It is the upper threat that annoys my curiosity. Any thoughts please.

It's pretty useless and looks like an after thought for the cars that didn't come with a phone.

I have a pen, my driving glasses and a hand sanitizer in there. Nothing else really fits.

Mine was used by the original owner as a M&M storage bin. Been picking out the residue ever since I purchased it!

Thank the Lord.

I was anticipating a barrage of “you idiot, it’s for holding xxxx”.
At least it’s just not me.

My big hate is rattled in car (and I bought a second X5). So I have pens in there wrapped in tissues to stop the rattles.

It would have been better if they had just left it as a square tray as the three fin parts just waste space and stop you getting more useless stuff into it.

I think it is designed to keep beer/wine bottle opener. After all the cooler is located right below it

The tray is designed for the old optional Motorola phone handset. There is even a small antenna mount that rotates upwards (in the extreme left side tray).

Oh wow. Thanks for that. And thanks to the OP for asking. I too was puzzled by the seemingly useless shape of the molding there. On my other BMW's, that area is handy for storing my wallet. Now we just need to come up with a cool DIY for modifying this area to be more useful!

AM.
