Verify they are the same as original coils. Will the coils sit correctly on a plug that is out of the vehicle? Length the same? Outside diameter the same?

Doh!! Don’t know why this just hit me, but maybe I’ll try swapping the spark plug boots and see what happens. Would amaze me if it works but I don’t have anything to lose if it does

That’s the total strange part, plug out, new coil pops right on, plug in... it’s a crap shoot. I might get 6 of 8 to seat and go to war with 2 but I’ve never been 8 for 8..

I even went as far as marking and seating an old plug and then marking and seating a new plug and they were within a sheet of notebook paper of each other. It’s Ming boggling really, if it were the same two coils each time I’d think alignment problems but I’ve marked and tested that theory too and that doesn’t seem to be it either.

I’m going to swap boots and see how it goes, will report back once I’ve had time to pull them this weekend.

Appreciate the creative thinking, thanks again!!

andrewwynn will become famous soon enough
Pull the boot loose from the coil and extend a little bit away from the coil so it snaps on the plug first then re-seats on the coil

Thanks andrewwynn

I still have the plastic covers pulled, I will give that a shot this weekend along with swapping a boot from one of my original coils.

I’ll keep you posted!

As noted, I did not buy them for any performance gain or any wanted mileage increase, I routinely exceed 21mpg in mine to this day, I know the Parts Manager at my local BMW dealer and as it happened he had a set of BMW Performance Coils (red tops) on the shelf when I picked up my AUX plug for my head unit, at $80 (dealer cost) for the coils and having 100k miles on mine... I couldn’t pass them up. Of course mine hadn’t failed, no issues no codes, but I figured I’d keep those as backups since I’m an over the road guy.

Being for the X5 4.4i (I’m sure they fit other 4.4s as well) I assumed they would be plug and play so to speak, in fact they are, I just can’t seem to get them to seat and snap on to the plug for some insane reason... Suckers are a spot on match to the stock coil, with the exception of a higher winding count, but for the life of me won’t seat.

Keep in mind I’ve had the entire front of this engine off, water pump, vanos out and cleaned, full cooling system overhaul, valve covers, left and right upper timing covers, you name it, I’ve even pulled the mech and replaced the bridge seal and 4 pickup tubes... but for the life of me I can’t get those blasted coils to seat.

I have to be missing something terribly obvious... though I’ve had no problem at all reseating the original coils, I assumed it was because the original boots HD already been “stretched out”... go figure maybe I’m just not a coil guy LoL...

(Un)fortunately, in a previous life I worked for a very large international company (conglomerate) that built everyone's ign coils, among a lot of other engine management, brake, fuel, etc, etc parts. Most of the HIPO coils were nothing more than a different epoxy/silicone color mix. All of the windings were were either improved in the design phase or were same as the OE build ones in a blue/red/yellow color pattern with a decal. Same assembly line, same materials 50 at a time. The Blue ones went into ford boxes, the red ones into brand X boxes, the yellow ones went into Accel boxes, etc.

With a lab scope and a little engineering work you can determine what you have. Like what was posted before, unless you have a modified engine (even then there are alternatives/options) the stock coil will produce 120% of what the plug needs to fire. Over building has limitations as the excess is just "wasted" on each firing. See ignition image on previous postings on coil oscillation humps show excess being spent.

On your fit and installation issue, check the total length of the tube (cheap ones have all kinds of variances. Check with a micrometer the gasket and seat areas. Some posters found that the older style aftermarket coils had a few units where the large metal square was mounted upside down during production and hence the bolt holes were on the wrong side (Quality control from third worlds is always interesting to say the least).
With the pencil coils the boot length and sealing gasket MUST be correct otherwise the unit will not seat in the hole so you never can lock down the flip lock. Trick, add some silicone spray to the boot area which may make the material compress allowing for an insert.

Let us know your findings as everyone is interested in a better out come.

Does your X5 have the newer style flip pencil coils? If yes, the OE plug boot is molded and glued in place as one unit and should not be replaceable.
Check the plug connection as the flips are designed to pull the connector in and push the coil down in one stroke. You can move the flips between coils. I will bet a $1 that the flips are poorly molded.

Hey StephenVA

You nailed it, they are the pencil style coils, with the flip up levers, amazingly all of mine came off clean, it was the new ones I struggled to reseat.

Strangest thing was there was no rhyme or reason, I would try and get 6 of 8 to seat, try again and only get maybe 4 of 8 to seat, try again and something different. My issue seems to be I can’t get 8 for 8, even marking the coils and trying them on different holes...

Back tracked the coils to Bavauto:
https://www.bavauto.com/bmw-ignition-coil-set-50058

Knowing those guys, I’m sure hoping that I got what I paid for - though they were “second hand” through my local BMW Dealership.

They seem to be made very well, clips and all as they’ve been on and off a few times and seem to be holding up, fingers crossed 🤞

Good note on the factory boots, I really thought that came off.. so that avenue may not be open to me.

I will try them again this weekend, I like the idea of some silicone lube, and see how they go.

Appreciate the input, thanks!’
