I have no personal experience but there are mixed reviews about the worth, benefit and longevity of Bavauto coils.

The only ones I have even read about are the two options that make any sense are the complete wiring harness and cam cover change to use the new pencil coils (M5 engines - S62) for racing applications. The shop that builds those engines mentioned that they "may" offer a consumer package some day if there is enough demand. Something I see limited. LINK to the forum discussion: https://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e3...onversion.html ...And the Bav Auto branded red ones. https://www.bavauto.com/bmw-ignition-coil-5002 (Old style coil) https://www.bavauto.com/mini-ignition-coil-5005 (Pencil or later style) I will hold off recommending these as the reviews are from users installing plugs and coils with NO dyno testing in a controlled environment showing back to back results. So it maybe all fluff. Included are the instructions that show that it maybe required to use a LARGE channel lock pliers to lock down the coil flip. ***HINT HERE IS THE SOLUTION on the original posting**** BAVARIAN AUTOSPORT High-Performance Ignition Coil Installation Instructions It is located at the VERY bottom of the page on the pencil style units.

I have spares that my ex-son in law got me in a junk yard. But that said I have never replaced any of the coils on any of my bmw's.
Most have 200,000 miles or so on them. One has over 400,000 miles on it. But I may of just been lucky. I change the plugs around 100,000 miles normally and that's all I do to them ignition wise.

I may be on to something. The boots on the bavauto coils slide down with some effort. It looks like I may be able to pull the boots away from the body 3/8 of an inch or so and reduce the “air pressure” in the boot as they push on. Just tried on on a loose plug with success... and had success in seating the body all the way back in to the boot, now to get to the weekend when I can actually test my theory on the car...
Worst case... I’ll stick with the originals that are on there now as I am not experiencing any issues with those. It was more one of those bird in hand deals I couldn’t pass up for $80... 2005 X5 4.4i (04/05 build date) Titanium Silver w/Black Interior |
