Andrew: You have outlined the plan I am working on. As the sensors are original so 18 years old they are my first guess. If I were 18 years old all four would now be changed.

If it was me I would buy a scan tool like the foxwell or get the cables and use a laptop. Something that can actually pull the codes for the abs. It will tell you exactly whats wrong.

For instance I have error lights on the 2001 one I bought. Its the abs pump itself not the sensors. But I wouldn't know this if I didn't have a scan tool.

FYI: Foxwell is useless. Already tried the 510 and there are no codes.
Pulled fuse 55 & 63 and took her for a couple of hundred yards spin. No problems except the trifecta with the BRAKE light solid red. I'll be nursing her the 18 miles to the mechanic. Driving without all the gizmos reminded me of driving armored vehicles along time ago in a universe far, far away.

Ok rereading this I now see there is nothing wrong with the system so no codes. Bad wheels sensors, contaminated sensors or wires leading to the sensors are all that can cause it act up like that with no codes.

Call up the wheel sensors and find the one triggering.

I don't remember if the foxwell does that or not. My laptop does but I don't remember which program I was using that for. I diagnosed that for a friend with a 330i.

Called the guy I found the problem for on the 330i and he reminded me I used the autoenginuity software on my notebook computer to find his problem.

Thanks Crowz. I'm looking into that now. Bought the FW 510 because it was supposed to support E53/E70. I was really interested in reprogram/register battery in the LCI E70. Well the story changed after I bought it and all you can do is replace existing with like and update the vehicle. It was not exactly stellar with this ABS problem either. So far I cannot see how to read the sensors other that me putting my scope on them.
I bought the EXPENSIVE Protool app to counter this and so far it will not even read the stupid battery! No support, no money back. At least I can use the wired & wireless dongle with something else by all accounts.

I don't recommend preemptive replacement. A scanner will show the RPM of each corner and can help you find a single bad sensor.

If you have multiple bad sensors it's more likely the module at fault. There is a design flaw in the board to connector wiring that causes common failure.

You said "the foxwell is useless" not an accurate statement, it's actually quite helpful, it's saying no errors in any of the systems it monitors. (And that's a lot of them).

The word brake in red is the key. It's none of normal ABS bugs.

With the 510 you can watch a lot of things real-time like the current brake lines pressure and the wheel speeds etc.

The only things I remember off hand that make brake light red are the hand brake and the fluid level.

Pulling the hand brake when driving will light the light but will not defeat abs nor set trifecta.

The confusing part is: why getting abs weirdness ? Once deactivated, abs should not do anything, just like fuses pulled. All the weirdness should be BEFORE trifecta.

When I had a loose wheel sensor, I would get abs activation the last 5-8 ft of stopping every time for about 8 strips then orange trifecta and the car would brake fine after that.

The one time I did get RED trifecta, my fluid was low. (Actually that must have happened twice; I blew a hole in a rear brake line once also).

The most common cause of trifecta is probably a bad alternator, so make sure that's running properly.

Back to 510: browse the abs module directly, they don't trip SES and will likely not be included in the full automatic scan.

If the proportioning valve circuit in the abs unit is clogged or messing up it will also cause the abs to go nuts when braking. Most cars the proportioning valve isn't inside the abs unit but a separate part and when it messes up it will cause the abs to activate erratically since it causes front or rear to lock up since the brake bias is off.

Just something else to throw at the mix.

Best way to catch this problem if that is the problem is to disable the abs and see if the car locks up a wheel to easy.

The red brake light came up and stayed on now I pulled the two fuses.
Where do you see the wheel sensors in the FW 510?

to find the sensor live data you need to browse the chassis main group; usually have to poke through a few to figure out where; could be in a weird place like 'kick panel module' or such. I can never remember, but i'll look for you next time i'm in my car with my scanner.

You won't be able to read live data until you have the abs fuses installed i expect. You may also get abs errors which you didn't with the fuses in.

Get the car to the repair guy/place then put the fuses back in to experiment you can hopefully find a little more data.

Was the braking system open for repair and possibly not bled properly using the bleed functions of the 510? air in the abs system could certainly give you the odd symptoms you described, but not sure about the errors.

I would try to find the brake pressure realtime data as well as the wheel speed data.
