Yes. It’s the same principle.

The lower engine rebuild is essentially the same procedure for all piston engines manufactured in the last 50 years. It’s not difficult and there’s dozens of guides and videos on the Internet.

The few specialty tools needed are available for rent from the local auto parts store.

Building an engine on a stand is much easier and more enjoyable than working in the car.

Headgasket replacement probably not ending well.

Don’t doubt that. My concern is my quality control is suspect, my skill level not great, my back is weak, tools are substandard. As my brother says- I’m a ready, fire, aim guy sometimes (as evidenced that a bought this thing originally)

Other than that, life is good.

LOL. Thanks for the jokes. But really, is there a school with that nickname? There should be, if not. I did a quick google on it, and saw Eglin AFB in Florida, which of course is not a school, but it's where I did my Air Force field training back in the day.

Yeah that's what we called EOD School but when I went it was held at Indian head Maryland... Where you got your Charles County "Crab" and we used to do bets for P&E night at the Nitro and learned exactly what a SMIB was...

Back to that photo of the broken TimeSert, I'm not seeing it. The TimeSerts are made of Steel. If that lighter stuff in the threads is Steel, it means the TimeSert must have ... well it seems impossible.

My inserts came in a pack of 15, so I've got one spare. Never installed the 15th one, so the bottom bulge has not been forged through yet, and I can't screw the original head bolt all the way through it. The inserts have outer M12-1.5 threads, vs. the M10-1.5 bolt, which means an extra mm of radius all around the head bolt. I see zero on your photo. I took some photos to show how obvious it should be if you've got the insert on the bolt.

The concern would be that you've got more of a steel insert left in the block than you think you do, and it might cause a problem when you try to helicoil or something else.

Also, it looks like whatever is on your headbolt is 12 threads long. The timeserts are about 15 threads long, just based on counting on the photos here. So if you somehow pulled out the top 12 threads on an insert (still seems almost impossible), then what's left in there would be about 3 threads at the bottom of the insert, with an 18mm long (12 threads x 1.5mm pitch) 10mm diameter sleeve above that ... which would not make for any easy thread repair unless you can get it out. A left handed 10mm+ drill bit might do it. And if you can succeed at that, you may be able to just do a re-do on the TimeSert.

Yes, odd. Wondering if a previous owner put something in it. The metal that came out was brittle and easily broken. Mystery.

So I re-tapped the one hole an put a helicoil in it and damned if it didn’t hold torque. 29.5 Foot lbs, two 90 degrees. Not certain it’s permanent but it’s all torqued down,

Putting the cam tray back in.

Ok I’m confused. I was certain the A side cam tray was intake , E for exhaust. Fortunately the trays only go in one way-and a friend dropped by to help, make fun of me and pointed it out.

LOL. Glad it worked. The E and A are for the German words. I would remember it as something like EEN and AAOUT (with my best German accent, learned watching Hogan's Heroes back in the day). Cracking myself up now just like back when I was doing the job.

Can you check on the removed threads to see if they are magnetic?
