Hey, How come your rusty old nasty lines look like mine did? Maybe poor choices of OE materials? LOL Had the same issues on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. The good news on that application was the dealer lines were cheap and pre-bent. One line all the way from the ABS unit to the rear axle. Everyone who owns an X5 should be pulling off the under body panel on the driver's side (Non right hand drive cars) and do an inspection this spring as your lines will fail. Mine had only 60K on them but it sits out side under a cover. Desert dwellers should be fine.

OE line was apparently made with too thin of rust prevention coating. It also was bent during assembly very sharp so it's a virtual certainly it will rust badly starting at the bend. Once the rust starts it will just migrate
Yes absolutely everybody should take off that body panel and inspect the brake lines. If you use some naval jelly to freeze the rust and paint with some Rust-Oleum you can avoid having the lines bust in the first place You can take out the screws and flex the panel down from the inner side without having to remove the single use plastic rivets. Also: it's the left side not the driver or passenger side since that moniker changes depending on the country.
