m62 vanos timing.and rebuild update

Well after the nice progress I had on the rebuild after the timing guides went ,I got to the putting it back together and the vanos timing stage.
this however didn't go as planned,
both vanos units have been besidian rebuilt, (not by me) an engineering company
so any whoo, put vanos on, put multimeter on pegs and to the stud on the oil feeder pipes, NOTHING. no beep, on either one ,3 hours of faffing around.still nothing , called up the place that rebuilt them and round out that you don't always get a beep , so ended up torging anticlockwise 40 nm , then torqueing down all studs,
then realising yesterday when I put the waterpump on, you cant put on the passenger side lower timing cover , so had to take of the damn thing again,
THEN , when I finally got the passenger side rocker ready I find out that the place where I got the rocker covers from have sent me 2 driver side ones,
so apart from this the main question is has any one had the vanos rebuilt and not had the beep when setting it up?
lets hope tomorrow is a better day

Only half of the vanos I've worked on short circuit they shouldn't even include that as part of the method. If you can turn them smoothly and they move the normal range and seat firm and stop that's all it takes.

FYI: passenger side not a reliable descriptor. Right/starboard and left/port better. Right is ALWAYS RIGHT not the side of your left when you are facing backwards.

Eg if you are facing me that NEVER EVER changes MY right arm to left it's ALWAYS my right arm.

More specifically: if your car is pointing North, the EAST side is the RIGHT side even if YOU are facing South.

cheers for the reply Andrew lets hope today is a better day .
not a lot more to do , other bank to rebuild. Jesus bolt, PS pump, rear rose bush,

if your sat in the car the part of the engine that has the tensioner on , is the right side or the drivers side ,
if your stood outside looking at the engine , it is now the left side, but still the drivers

its 08:00 its too early.

I'm in the USA so "driver side" is opposite hence the pointless use of driver side vs left and right.

Do people really not know left from right that the world needs to avoid the correct terms?

The repair manual uses left and right. When you face the car from the front, your left is the car's right ALWAYS. It really is that simple right and left never change based on where the viewer is standing.

Anyhow even though most of the world uses the terms "driver side and passenger side" apparently because peoole can't tell left from right, in a forum where 2/3 use left hand drive (notice I didn't say driver's side drive), it's best to always use only right and left since you don't know if the other guy is using LHD or RHD

It's 3am about an hour past my bedtime here.

When I'm in my car the tensioner is also on the drivers side because I have the M54 engine and I'm in the USA and LHD.

When I'm in the drivers seat I'm on the left side of the car.

When outside the car looking back the tensioner didn't magically flip sides it is was and always will be on the LEFT side.

It will be on MY right *at the time* which has no bearing on what it's position is. I'm not suddenly EAST of you if you face south. :-)

FYI: I'm pretty sure I've taken the LEFT timing cover but there is definitely a trick.

One bolt, I think the top most right most (closest to center), can't be reached with a socket and can't be removed, it has to be loosened and taken out with the cover. (Install reverse of removal).

It may be part of the intake not the water pump It was a while ago I worked on a couple of the M62 and I think I ended up taking the water pump anyhow so it was just a chicken and egg order of things. I was following a guide that didn't remove the water pump to get to the timing chain guides.

(I could be remembering wrong the photos I have of the engine the water pump is off)

just a quick update Andrew, after the blonde moment putting it all back together,. 15 minutes before the garage was due to close, it was the moment of truth
myself and 3 of the other lads stood in front of the car , and braced them selves.
turn of the key and she ran, I couldn't believe it .
little lumpy at first, then she smoothed out , no error codes, no leaks, nothing, couldn't have been happier

I've been through that same experience a couple times.

The second time the car didn't start; owner left out the fuse for the gas pump, then when he figured that out and put the fuse in, discovered he never connected the fuel rail and shot a quart of gas onto the back of his engine. After those two hiccups the engine started right up.

Boy it feels good when an engine that was through open heart surgery fires up and runs smoothly.

Love the blonde moment line reminds me of a story from high school: a girl comes into the art classroom to ask the teacher of he has a coat hangar as she just locked her keys in the car.

Her boyfriend, following the teach and girlfriend out of the room says while shaking his head, and she's not even a real blonde.

haha
my moments were...………...
putting water pump on , and realising you cant put one of the upper covers on with the pump in place. so off it came
putting all the covers on the engine , the MAF and the air ducting to find I'd forgotten 2 coolant pipes. so had to take it all off
filling it with oil that was in 2x4 litre bottles instead of the normal 5 , so you put one full one in , then just take out 3 thinking you put in 8., but in fact you just put in 6, and not realising it till you drove 2 miles from garage to home

putting the lower PS pump inlet pipe, onto the pump and filling it up , for it to leak , and figuring out that there should be 3 washers on the pump and not just 2
(there is an indent on the pump where a washer goes, then you put the normal 2 washers on as normal)
oh, at 3 to 4K I get what sounds like a supercharger, further diagnostics are required,
finally , here in the UK we have a MOT ,its a test to see if the car is road worthy , my test runs out next week,.
the beast decided to greet me with a front passenger door handle break, MOT failure,
oh joy
