Cracked my Coolant tank thermostat - Questions
My questions, for understanding and urgency - what if the tstat is not in there. does this then not circulate coolant to the engine car, thereby causing the car to take longer to heat up? or is it the opposite, always circulating to the engine core... Or something else? Hopefully the dealership has the part and I will get it tomorrow (I can use public transport)... but just in case. My luck, the tank split right before Easter when i need to drive... womp. |

If I read your question correctly, I think you broke the thermostat for the auto trans cooler. Easily done, and common problem. I can't remember, but if you can put it back together without leaking coolant, it will be fine to drive. Then just replace the thermostat insert when you get a new one.
Without that piece, your trans fluid temp will be slower to come up to temp, but that's not a big deal unless you live in a very, very cold climate.

Hi, yes. This is the tstat at the bottom of my expansion tank. Ok, so if I pull it out entirely, and put on my new tank, the car will work just not heat up the coolant as fast... I'll take it apart and put it in when I get the part in a few days if I can't get it from the dealer. Thank you

Expansion tank or radiator? I read it as expansion tank and the only thing in the expansion tank is the fluid level sensor, no t-stat.
If you are talking about the t-stat for the auto trans cooler, that is at the bottom corner of the radiator? What year and what model are you driving? Didn’t see it listed in your dog? |

2003 X5, yes it is a tstat at the base of the coolant expansion tank. I just pulled the broken bottom out, coolant started to push out so I put the broken half back in. The thing is a little black cylinder with two springs in it and some copper colored metal parts.

The tstat for the trans cooler is at the bottom of the expansion tank. I think that's what he's talking about.
Without that tstat, the engine coolant will heat just fine. The trans oil will be slow to come up to temp in very cold ambient air temps.

Roger that - I somehow read that as “in” the expansion tank

You all got it right, thermostat For auto trans oil cooler" bmw part #17111437362. Thank you for the info... I like to understand things, glad that tstat was able to pull out. I was hating myself for a minute there when I thought it was part of that piece below....

Cracked my Coolant tank thermostat - Questions
They always self destruct on removal. Most people screw a screw into them to pull them out. When I bought my reservoirs they came with the thermostat.
As covered above, you can drive without it but the transmission will be over cooled so will run cooler than designed and not great for long term.

I was able to get the part at the dealer... $130 with taxes, ouch! Everything went back together smoothly, but at first one of the hoses was not full put in, so things leaked a bit... what I find most annoying is that the car was still dripping fluid b/c of the waste that dumps out the tank when removing it... so makes it hard to say the thing is not leaking right away... after a few hours it was not dripping so think I am in the safe zone. Agree it is a pretty easy repair. i used the Mehle replacement from pelicanparts and it was a perfect fit. Now I just need to fix the rest of my car issues (which are not dire, but nonetheless still annoying).
Thank you everyone!!! |
