2001 (and similar) ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Wiring
I absolutely cannot stand the BMW sound system. I was content enough with just changing the head unit in my E39 which dramatically upgraded performance over the stock amplifier (even though the speakers were now only being powered by the head unit), but it's been a while since I've installed a completely upgraded sound system in one of my cars. Just to clarify, please take the following variables into account when using this information as it may or may not apply to you: Vehicle: 2001 X5 4.4, non-nav, with DSP (originally), 17 pin radio connetor Head Unit: Pioneer (specifically an AVIC-7000NEX, but should apply to all Pioneer units) Steering Wheel Adapter: Axxes ASWC-1 Radio Adapter Harness: Metra 70-8591 (17 pin) Most of the posts I saw indicated that you had to pick up the Ibus signal for the steering wheel controls in the steering column or the cover, that the wired needed to be cut and tapped into the unit. While this may be true in some cases (I cannot verify anything other than the model I'm working with), I'm not a fan of cutting into the wiring harness unless it's really a time-saver, or there is no other work-around. The actual connection took less time (by far) than the search for the information, and was painfully simple. Since I had the radio otherwise wired and ready to go in, it was quick to plug it in and confirm that it functioned properly. Three wires are used in total on the ASWC-1 (not including the "plug" wire that simple plugs into the back of the Pioneer unit): Red, Black, and Pink. Red is simply tied into the 12V switched wire going to the radio (should be red on your Metra Harness or Radio Harness. If tapping into the original harness it will be in Pin # 5 of the car's original 17 pin connector and (Violet/White Stripe). Black goes to ground which is the Black wire on the Metra or Radio harness, or Pin 15 on the car's original 17 pin connector (Brown). Pink goes to the IBUS (DAC) wire on the car's original 17 pin connector (White/Grey Stripe/Yellow Dots (or "dashes")), which is Pin 7. Please not that a lot of places I found the colors mentioned for IBUS wire as "Grey/White Stripe/Yellow Dots" but mine is definitely more white than grey. If you've connected the Red and Black wires without tapping into the original harness, and want to avoid doing so with the IBUS wire, I simply de-pinned an unused wire from the Metra Harness (takes two seconds with a simple/cheap de-pinning tool for GM Weatherpak connectors such as: Amazon.com: Weather Pack Pin Removal Tool: Automotive ) and moved the wire to the hole corresponding to Pin 7 and soldered it to that. Here's a link to a diagram of the 17 pin connector that I found useful: http://cdn.schematic.me/images/www.b...es/radioWD.jpg Hope this helps someone not lose so much time over this install that is so simple. |
