I flipped my gear without taking anything apart and drove that way for 6 years till the other side wore out. Then I spent $15 and got a new gear. It’s on Amazon and comes in two days. Put that in while making a slight diy to my flipped gear thread. Easy breezy, 30 min extra to flip gear, clean out gunk, lube and assemble. No other component looked like it needed a replacement.

There are pics of the flipped gear with both sides chewed up in my actuator thread. I finally replaced it. So take a look. And I figured out how open up the actuator easy breezy as well.

Can you share your method of opening up the actuator? I had spent about an hour on mine and couldn't open it a few years back and decided to just flipped the gear and call it the day.

Post 23. Stick flathead through motor drive hole. It will hit opposite flat end. Wiggle screw driver back and forth to pry off the plate.

Plate has to be hammered back in, so I don’t get how people were able to pry it open with a knife from the top. There is just no way in hell. Leatherman is sending me a new knife for that reason.

Pictures in that thread. Stupid easy to do.

In those cases I usually add a little notch I can use to pry. Like removing the inner race from a front hub: cut a little notch with right angle grinder next to the hub then a chisel first right in.

Thanks, but that was exactly what I had tried a few years back and had bent up a long screwdriver in the process. Even sprayed and soaked the entire plate edge with WD-40 for 20+ minutes before prying and poking. Gave up after that.

Agreed that there's no way in hell someone can pry it open with a knife from the top. Heck, where weren't even any slits for any edge of a knife to be able to wedge in there! It may be wise for me to just spend that $130 for that replacement unit when the time comes. For now, the flipped gear is still working.

That was my logic. Wife needed her X5. If I screwed it up or ran into problems doing the gear swap then her car is down till the new comes in. Simpler, safer and just better off for me to replace the entire thing. Wham bam done.

Yea. I stuck in exactly that husky screwdriver that’s in the pic through the motor shaft hole. Deff do not need any special tool or to grind out a notch. Just jab that screwdriver pretty much where that plate meets the body and pry by turning screwdriver back and forth. Once you get a lip up, you can pry from the outside around perimeter.

Anyway you do it is fine. That body of the actuator is pretty much empty.

Anyway. $130 vs $15. Time vs speed. I kept the original part. And I knew there is nothing that would stop me from opening up that case and swapping gears.

I’m not saying people shouldn’t buy the whole unit. Just something to keep in mind I guess.

I don't remember having a hard time getting the cover off when doing this. I can't even remember which method I used to do it as it was quick and painless.

Why did you mark the case and the gear Slick? I don't remember doing that either. Man getting older sucks.
