2002 E53 4.4i - rough idle, surging power.

Original codes pointed to MAF and Throttle Body - replaced both, no difference. Replaced fuel pump, still no good.

I am not getting any codes other than MAF and TB, I have checked for continuity on TB, all wires to the ECM.

I tried to code the TB, but can't seem to do that with Rheingold or DIS with my USB-ODBII cable.

I'm really hoping some kind soul can give me some advise on what to do next. I've been off the road for 2 months now, and am way deep in Mexico, can't find anyone who has experience with BMWs here.

Sounds like you may have a hidden vacuum leak, I would start tracing and checking your vacuum lines as a first step and see if you find anything broken or disconnected.

working on it

Making a smoke machine based on this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9CDZ9lu6Rs&t=387s

we will see what we see when I'm ready to test tomorrow.

what scanning hardware do you have? can you view the realtime throttle position? I think there are two sensors to average for redundancy; you said you replaced the TB, but did you keep the sensors from the original. 'feels like' a sensor with a dead spot to me.

unplug the MAF and the engine will estimate the fuel /air mix but it will eliminate the MAF from the calculation; if the idle is smooth power is smooth, then far more likely MAF related.

realtime data for fuel trim/ O2 can help determine if the computer is trying to adjust to some wiggy information like an O2 sensor reporting hi/low/hi/low that's not really happening. (you won't get an DTC from an o2 sensor that is reporting values that can happen organically. The computer will just adjust the fuel mix up and down accordingly.

That said, unplugging the pre-cat O2 could force a 'limp home' mode that will avoid a positive-feedback-loop that can cause surging.

ps: surging can be from camshaft position/ vanos as well, so read realtime values on that; at idle, or constant load, the cam angle request should be pretty stable.

Are the TB and MAF replacements OE or OEM versions? Can you post video of how the engine runs? Will it hold an RPM such as 3000RPM or does always surge? No codes for misfires? What are the code numbers? Codes can be misleading. What troubleshooting have you done? Have you checked for a vacuum leak between the MAF and TB.

As mentioned smoke test is good idea. If you are in for the long haul you might want to consider this version of smoke tester. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np_duzsaZxI

Codes and Software

The MAF and TB are both 3rd party, from BAV Auto (just before they shut down)

I was using DIS, but then migrated to Rheingold, but the laptop is so old that it was painful.

I now have a newer laptop, what software do you recommend for effective troubleshooting? I'll buy/load up whatever you recommend to provide better info.

As for sensors from TB, I just did a straight swap of the unit, I didn't see anything to remove from old one to move to new one?

I did a vac leak check, and seems ok, no smoke coming out anywhere.

Rough idle is the same if the new/old/no MAF connected.

Depending upon how many sensors might be the culprit, might it be easiest for me to just order them and swap them all? If cheap enough that is...

The rough idle is constant, and slight variation in RPM, but the throttle also doesn't respond.

What cable to use for E series?

I have a USB to ODBII cable, that has the two pins jumpered, but I don't have an ICOM cable - from what I've read you need to have ICOM to do any programming with an E series, if that is correct please confirm, and if you can suggest a seller or a link to get just the cable I need.

I ordered a Foxcon NT520 today, but wont' get that for a couple of weeks...

I use the Schwaben by Foxwell for BMW/Mini that, by the way, is currently on sale at either Turner Motorsports or ESC Tuning, don't remember which.

In cases of a rough idle I check for codes as an indication of what simple, easy, quick troubleshooting I can do for confirmation. In your case since you only have codes for MAF and TB, no codes for a particular cylinder or cylinders the first thing I would do is a pressurized smoke test making sure there are no vacuum leaks, focusing especially between the MAF and throttle body. The inlet tube is a common source of a vacuum leak or the tube might not be sealed properly on the throttle body. If there is no vacuum leak anywhere it is on to eliminating the MAF as the problem. I would then make sure the connector and wiring to the MAF are good. If the idle doesn't change when the MAF connection is removed that can be an indication the MAF is not functioning since the engine reverts to computer setting for Air/fuel mixture when connection is not in place. Sometimes when there is a secondary problem the change is hard to hear or measure. Does the engine seem to be louder at an idle and sound like it is roaring but not revving accordingly or won't rev to redline? That is another indication the MAF might be faulty. I am not saying the MAF is the problem, only that it should be completely eliminated before moving to other possibilities.

Best practice when purchasing 3rd. party parts is to be sure they are produced by the original maker of the BMW part or an established 3rd. party improved on the original part.

Foxwell NT520 vs Fowell Schwaben?

In terms of functionality, features, is there a clear winner?

Until you have the scanner if you can get any of the programs to run, you can read the live data from the devices.

MAF disconnected should cause changes in rpm but also you'll get an instant code. Are you getting code right away from MAF? Wiring is suspect from your descriptions
