Flaking paint...anyone else has been through that?

I guess I have a new project on my list...it's happening on the hood and the roof, and also in other hidden areas alongside the door and rear hatch.

Hopefully I can get it under control so I don't have to repaint the whole car.

Oh wow! I know the suckers have their issues - for sure - but brother that sucks!! I’ve heard of a lot, but that one is new to me.

I wish you all the luck!!

You have an idea how you’re going to stop/control it??

Had it happen to an E12 back in the 70's. Polaris silver; my favorite BMW color.

I have a couple spots on the hood of my 01 where the clear is flaking off. Local shop looked at it and said it won't be a big deal to respray it and blend the fender tops. I offered to R+R the grilles/trim and that saved about 2hr of book time.

Mine did the same. I did not have the whole car repainted, just the hood, front and top of the windshield. I still have the primer showing in some areas in the door and hood jams.
It’s a known problem.

OP, that's the actual paint flaking off, right? Wow, that's extreme. How is the clear coat?

I live just over the hill from you in HMB, and the clear coat on my 2001 is starting to flake off in a few places, including the exact same spots on the front of the roof. Hood too. Underlying paint is fine, except of course dulling once the clear coat comes off.

I had this happen to my old Lexus too, and I'll say the first thing to consider is whether the problem is truly isolated to the currently affected areas. Or is it just a matter of time before these issues pop up everywhere.

Because you'd hate to get these areas fixed perfectly, and then next year find new spots popping up every month or so ... which is how it seems to be going on my X5 and Lexus. (both are parked outside 24/7 in the sunny climate here)

I am afraid it's all over and it's a matter of time indeed. It's the original paint, and no clear coat fading.

We will be traveling for a couple months this summer and I will leave the truck at the body shop. I will probably just have them do the hood and the front of the roof for now, and the hidden door sections. Then I'll hope it last for another couple years or so...

Unfortunately, this is an old issue...when I saw your pic it reminded me of old threads from back around 2012/2013.

Here's some old threads & pics:

It's strange that it happens after so many years. I wonder if the build dates were around the same period of time.

I have clearcoat peeling on my hood, but I think it's isolated to that. Blue paint is particularly vulnerable, though I can't remember exactly why. It had to do with the changes mandated to make paint less toxic.

I'm wrestling with whether to attempt to repair the CC using a spraycan 2K clear or just bite the bullet and sand/repaint the whole hood. I have to do some painting on my wife's X3, so I'm tempted to just go ahead and order the paint to do my hood. If so, the rear bumper cover could stand to be re-done also.

AM.
