2003 4.6is, up on lift, should all 4 wheels spinning?
My car is on lift. It's 03 4.6is. If I put in to D, should all 4 wheels be spinning? Since it's 40:60 ratio? Mine just spins rear as idle in D. If I give little gas, then front wheels start to spin, then DSC comes on and locks up the front wheels. Behind story, I just had about 1800 miles road trip. Everything went well, the car didn't die during the trip, so I was glad. However, on the way back, I started to hear ruh-ruh-ruh sound or wah-wah-wah sound coming from front. I'm trying to diagnose whether the sound is from wheel bearing or transfer case or front differential? Do you know any good ways to diagnose this problem? Thanks. |

With 2/3 the torque on the rear I would expect onky the rear to turn until either the DSC or manual brake was applied (hand brake only back).
I've done similar to turn wheels but I still had the rear on the ground to turn the fronts.

The way the front wheels are behaving on the lift sounds normal to me.
The noises I had when the wheel bearing failed was more of a roar. No pitch changes during the noise just a constant noise that only varied by speed changes. But I have seen the fail on other cars like your describing.

Best way to rule out or confirm wheel bearing is change the tire to a thinner or fatter wheel.
Example: I just swapped wife's 255s to 235s and instantly the "where is that hum" coming from instantly became obviously the right rear bearing. Bearings don't usually whawhawha so I would first expect tire. A tire swap will of course also rule out tire.

So if you get the rear wheels stuck in mud but the front wheels on solid ground to get it to move you have to get a good spin out the rears to get it to pull itself out. If I don't spin the rear wheels at high speed it just sits there slowly turning the rear wheels and not moving. Im sure if the abs pump worked it would force more power to the front if it could.

I just had mine on the lift and put into D to check transmission fluid levels and all 4 of mine rotated, plus when it was on the rollers for brake function check at inspection (front then rear) the wheels rotated independently of the other axle at idle.

I cant see from your post what year your X5 is EODguy but the op's car is an non xdrive like my 2001 so that might be why it spun with it on the lift in drive?
My non xdrive 2001 doesn't put anything to the front it seems power wise unless the rear wheels are turning fairly fast. My xdrive x5's definitely put more to the front than my non xdrive.

Next time you are spinning one axle, manually apply brakes. It's gotten me out of ice and snow many times in Wisconsin winters. DSC will brake just the one axle/tire spinning if the abs is operational. I've come out of steep enough ditches that I've had the front wheel come well off the ground and it will be slammed to a stop by the DSC. That can lead immediately to the opposite corner spinning next since there is far less weight on that wheel with no force up on the floating wheel.

I bought the 2001 just to feed the dogs at the old place so its not a big deal. I will replace the abs unit on it sometime this summer probably. Looking forward to see how it does then. The other x5's I have are xdrive and they never spin at all. Maybe a minor hiccup kind of feeling and just goes on without spinning. The non xdrive one is hopeless compared to them but with the abs unit dead its not a fair comparison just yet. Once I fix the abs on the 2001 then I can really compare the two types.
