Headgasket first startup questions
Kinda looking for a preflight checklist if you will. I’m going to turn the motor over by hand but I’ll bet it will be hard to do with the spark plugs in. I’m changing the oil, I’m replacing the coolant. Will double check any wiring connections and vacuum connection. My biggest concern since I had the some of the fuel system apart is a fuel leak. I’ve done my best to avoid one. Any “gotchas” would be appreciated. Thanks Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

If no leaks, maybe pull the fuel pump fuse or relay and crank the engine to build oil pressure and also check for oil leaks. If no leaks present and everything sounds normal cranking, put the fuel pump fuse or relay back, hold your breath and crank the engine and start the car. Good luck!

Thanks. Good tips.Specially the hold the breath part.
I expect to get lots of smoke from assembly lube and such. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

A buddy of mine forgot to hook up the main fuel line. It will spray like a fire hose it will do so key on engine off so just turn the key on and listen for the fuel pump to charge and stop while you are standing outside the car and can look for leaks. You are not likely to get any unless you missed something big like he did.
His was worst case scenario and he didn't do the check and tried stubbornly to start the car for a while until about a pint of gas worked it's way down the firewall and made a puddle under the car. Nothing will be hot enough to cause ignition so it's very low risk. Doing the timing requires hand cranking the engine so you should have already done that I can't think of a reason to do it again but it won't hurt either. 20" or so ratchet long enough to crank with plugs in. It's stiff no doubt though.

I highly recommend a drop of oil in each cylinder before putting spark plugs in. Lube up those rings before hitting it with fire.

The fuel system pressurize when you turn the ignition on. Just check for any leaks after the pump stops.
Assembly lube is usually only used on new parts, like a new camshaft, but won’t hurt anything. I like to hand crank the engine through a timing cycle to make sure there’s no physical interference. (Piston hitting a valve) In case I made an error in timing assembly.
