Automatic Transmission oil in diff ?

Hi guys, was wondering if I can get away with automatic transmission fluid in my front and rear diffs in my 02 3.0d ?

ATF is usually SAE 20 or 30. Our diffs spec 75w90.

Definitely correct answers above - differentials need gear oil. Your confusion may be with the transfer case, which often does take ATF, and for these I think DEXRON III is the spec.

Right on for the OP's pre-facelift, but facelift models are X-drive and use a specific fluid from the dealer. Havent seen a commercially available equivalent for those at the time I did my X-drive transfer case oil.

Shell TF0870 is the original name. There are a number of alternative products about but some are hard to find and cost about the same as the BMW fluid. Which BTW is called "DTF 1" now - the older named product - "Power Divider Fluid" - in NLA... Pretty sure they just changed the name though..
