Thanks.

If the battery was out of the car prior to first startup would there still be MAP stored? I plan on checking for vacuum leaks tomorrow. I suspect ICV is dirty/bad, also rebuilt the DISA, will see if that is functioning.

Also, Only code I get is bad MAF but haven’t driven it at all yet.

The maps are in the ECU. They are not deleted when the battery is disconnected. The ECU reverts to these stored maps when the MAF is disconnected.

Update: swapped a re-man MAF in and fired right up, no codes. Even drives.....

Still tinkering with putting all the extra stuff I removed to get at the engine but definitely encouraged.

Is a little odd how a working MAF quit after only being removed.

Not so uncommon to disturb old original parts during a repair and have them never work again.

Nice work on the repair. Trials a tribulations, but the feeling of success is usually worth it.

Only a little odd. Old shit does funny things. Think of it like this: it was 99.5% broken and just needed one little tap to break whatever broke.

G-forces are a funny thing. Installed in the car MAF probably will never experience more than 10g. Setting on a work bench could possibly be 50-100. Drop it a foot, could be 500.

Think of it like this: any motion is stopped nearly instantly when setting something on a surface: the distance taken to decelerate is what causes the g force and if you drop from even 1cm, when it hits the table it's deceleration zone is only how much the part and table compress. Could be 1/2 a mm or less. The math gets large fast.

I had a phone fall face first about 2 feet to cement once, the case prevented the glass from touching but it landed perfectly flat so the stop was similarly less than 1/2 mm; the entire glass screen shattered, likely experienced 1000-1500g force. The biggest piece was less than a square cm.

The good news is your experiment proved the MAF system was really doing its job! If it could convince the brain to alter the gas mix to actually stall the car that's a wide range of control.

Thanks. I appreciate your well worded analogy. My world is more binary- on/off, function/non-function.

Putting all the bits back in soon (cooling fan, shroud, wiper fluid reservoir, etc). Kinda funny on first startup I got a “ding” and idiot light and thought to myself “here we go” only to get the wiper fluid low message. Hah.

First time start after headgasket not so good.

Funny on the wiper fluid. I had that light come on a day or two ago while driving and had the similar moment of anxiety "what now"

The MAF was binary you just were closer than realized to "zero" than "one". Once the threshold was reached it went to "zero".

The thing is there is no one nor zero in our binary circuits. Example on a 5 volt system usually there will be a threshold for "one" and another for "zero" for example, above 3 volts is "one" and below 2 volts is "zero". That way when there is noise on the line, it can be ignored. When the voltage is in the middle nothing changes it will stay at the last state until it clearly is close enough to the high or low value then it will "flip" to the other state.

Things often work "until they don't" where you get something with no moving parts like the MAF that just instantly stops working. It was good to work through the diagnosis on the forum I have no doubt future shade tree mechanics will find this thread and be very happy you paved the way
