I've done the full timing a few times with the gas tools they are wonderful.

I don't know if you need to remove the lower timing chain cover to set timing I hope not it's a beast to remove the Jesus bolt.

I've even considered cutting a notch in the upper timing covers like the back of the engine has to access the bolts for setting timing without removing the upper covers.

Here's the guide I also referenced. It goes deeper but some of the tips are very helpful.

GOFAST GUY is on a distinguished road

You guys were a huge help!! My buddy came over yesterday and we went through the steps of setting up the timing tools I picked up from German Auto Solutions. We got the engine back in time and got enough of it back together to start it up for a second and it runs!! I'm so happy that nothing got bent with it went out of time. Now comes the job of putting everything back together again...

Question: What size of socket do you use to tighten the Vanos Solenoid? We loosened it with channel locks but when put the valve covers back on and now can't reach in far enough to tighten them up. It looks like a super deep socket what would have to slide over the whole body of the solenoid.

The vanos is a special thin walled socket. You can use an open end wrench or slip joint pliers if the timing cover is still loose so you can reach inside. The outer cover will just turn if you try to use a pliers on the outside to tighten.

I didn't have the deep socket but realized I would have to tighten from the inside before putting on the timing covers (reverse of disassembly)

If I needed to use a socket I was going to try to use a hot water heater socket. There are a couple sizes I think one would be the right size or close enough to modify with a big hammer. The key is that they are very thin stamped metal so should fit into the deep hole.

Sounds like what we would call a tube spanner...

Yes that's exactly the type of socket it's used for hot water heater elements. I don't remember the size but close to 30-32mm.

E53 4.6is engine Timing help - loose cam shaft bolt

The official socket.
https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-1...d-32mm-socket/

A very promising alternative for 80% less:
GearWrench 80827 1/2" Drive 12 Point Deep Metric Socket 32mm https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003L1ZZV4..._T3TiDbFV6RX87

Unfortunately the water heater element wrench is 1.5" not 1.25" so will not work. They make them with two sizes but the alternative size is 1 7/8 so no luck there.

If I had to I could make one from some 1 1/4" conduit just bevel a 1 1/4 nut and heat up some 1 1/4" conduit or exhaust pipe and pound it on. I usually have some of that conduit laying around from my last handrail job.

Example of bent 1 1/4” conduit as a handrail.

Once again, you guys have been a HUGE help. Thank-you for your help on this. I found a local shop, Alpine Auto in Calgary, that lent me their socket to tighten the solenoids and my X5 is now close to being back on the road!!

You guys ROCK!!

I drove the X5 out of the garage yesterday and washed it. On the way back, I started hearing a ticking sound which, once I got home, was coming from the first cylinder on the driver's side. I sounds like a stuck lifter but last fall I flushed the oil twice with Sea foam doing two oil changes after driving it 500+kms. The local garage said it might be a scored cylinder or a broken lifter which got smacked when the timing was off... Now I have to pull the valve cover again and see if I can see whether or not all the lifters are moving like they should. This is such a 'love/hate' relationship right now.

Once it starts. It snowballs sometimes. Good luck.

Hey guys, I've gotta do a leak down test on my engine but I need to jumper the leads and remote start it. Does anyone know where I can find the starter relay diagram?
