That might be my car after headgasket. Mine wonít run with MAF connected. Maybe he has the same issue.

Why do you suspect it's the MAF? Car runs perfectly fine. My problem is very intermittent and it only happens during initial startup. When this occurred, the car would always fire right up on 2nd try

I suggest that because I recently did the headgasket on my car and on the first restart my car tried to start but would stall quickly. Once I disconnect the power to it the engine ran correctly. I swapped a known good MAF in and it still runs great. Just recent anecdotal evidence evidence. Your might just be dirty.

I always start with the simplest and cheapest possible solution. Might work, might not.

My issue is intermittent. I could start 10 times and it may start and run perfectly and then the issue can pop up on the 11th start. Are you suggesting that I totally disconnect the MAF and drive with it disconnected for a few days? I'm not comfortable with leaving the MAF disconnected.

No. MAF is still original

No, not at all. If itís random, and once in awhile. Wasnít clear to me. If it runs and drives 90+%, likely not your problem. Not even sure you can drive around with disconnected MAF. I think it will put the trans in limp mode.

Mine is apparently a different condition.

I ordered a MAF online Sun, gets here Wed.
I installed the MAF from my wifeís e46, slightly different opening, and it ran fine (ductaped the opening ).

My original MAF runs fine disconnected, connected causes stall.
Wifeís MAF just the opposite- runs fine connected, stalls disconnected.

Odds are good that is the ignition switch is the cause. When it won't start do the dash and headlights function normally? OEM switch will be fine though BMW part price is not outrageous.
