Releasing the pressure is extremely easy - the pipe unions are only on 5nm tight or so - so no force required - and very unlikely to leak (as the unions are in the boot of the car, underneath the boot covering - so will not have corroded)). Am sure it'll be fine!

Just don't follow the You Tube guide where a workshop guy does it "with no special bmw tools needed" - he smacks the sht out of it with a club hammer!!!!!!! If you crack the hub carrier then it's a lot more work to replace (handbrake cable is a bit of a bgger to remove as they corrode in pretty tight).

To reinflate the air bag - this should be done with the car in the air using INPA/DIS etc - or else you can VERY gently and slowly/stage by stage lower the car with the engine running and it should gradually fill the airbag back up (I've not had much success with the latter method though and end up using DIS/INPA!). The level sensor arms are easy to put on the wrong way round (they have a ball joint/arm which can flip backwards - and that'll cause an error and the suspension to stop working - you just flick it back through it "ark of motion" to reinstall full operation - get the workshop to take photos before they remove them if they're not sure what they're doing. It's a silly and easy mistake to make (which I've done several times...).
Hmm thanks even more anxious now, will hope for the best

Seriously mate. Nothing to worry about. I’d be more concerned you’ll destroy the bushing tool than the car! Mine were rusted in pretty tight.

Too true i think there are more important things in life,on a side note seems that some other suspension bits and bobs need replacing as the plastic boot is perished on part 6 both sides(and it displays some play and i guess that will after indirectly tire wear etc?weird thing is i was getting outer tire wear on left hand side both rear and front)

No news I would say is good news, but in this case car has been with mechanic from from 8am and now 2pm and no news is probably not good news as was expecting a quote on those suspension link part 6 before moving on with repairs, anyway we shall see, at least he has the tool to remove bushes.

All done mechanic says, will pickup tomorrow after alignment, hopefully alignment guys don't come back and say there is another issue as it was they who pointed out the rose bushings were worn preventing them doing a proper alignment (nearly 1 year ago now-which is when front thrust bushings were replaced)....

What the mechanic WILL need is the special BMW ball joint removal/installation tool (or an aftermarket copy tool). Generic tools don't work on this particular joint due to clearance issues... Check they have one of these tools before they commence working on your car.
Hey Wpoll the X5 continues to swallow the $$$$$ BUT i guess ignoring smallish issues they soon pile up, anyway via mechanic I trust all went well!, he didn't have to remove any air from air suspension, he did something via the computer he said to lower pressure? and also changed out the upper guide (control arm) links in rear...they had play in em, he showed me buggered ones...
bushings were some 45 gbp for the pair (got em from the uk)
tie rods 57 euros each
labour 160 euros
alignment 60 euros
(plus 300 for starter +install back in dec)
I spend more on the car than on myself....hahahah

Glad it's now sorted, omodos.

Yes, these old girls certainly have a healthy appetite for parts! Mine's currently waiting on a new engine viscous fan clutch and she's nearing another oil service.

I told my family that any birthday and Christmas presents for me would have to be E53 parts.... and my wife took me seriously, so guess what I'm getting for my birthday....

Sounds like I need to find myself a wife! Car presents are the best!

Wish me luck, if the weather plays nice, will be trying to sort out my ball joints this weekend!
