Thermostat understanding

Went for a short low speed drive in my project e53 3.0. Scanner connected.

Engine coolant temp gradually rising along with lagging outlet temp.

50/30
60/35
70/42
80/45
90/45
95/47
98/42
Gradually rising 101 but going down to 38
105/35
Pulled into the driveway hit 117/37.

I popped the hood, upper hose is hot and tight, lower hose is not hot and tight.

Almost like the heater element opened the thermostat then it closed back down.

Or, even though I bled it thoroughly, there is still air in the system. Plenty of heat in the cabin.

?

T-stat should open about 90C you should never see numbers over 100, points to t-stat not opening enough or low flow from plugged radiator or problem with water pump.

When I've tracked my goesin vs goesout radiator temps I've been surprised how got the goesout was.

What engine?

Yes electric thermostat likes to keep engine hot.

On the 3.0 I see 93-97C

On the 4.6 I see it go to up to 117C sometimes.

It’s a 3.0 M54b30 to be exact.

I guess I’m confused by how this thermostat works. Supposed to open slowly with 12v at the heated pole. Is that on startup or at a certain temp? Once opened, would it stay opened? Or partially open? Seems after driving both hoses would be hot.

Pulling radiator and WP and T-stat soon.

The DME controlled heater in the thermostat lowers the engine temperature a bit at times for emissions reasons. Otherwise the wax pellet motor in the thermostat operates like any other.

The only way the upper hose can be tight and the bottom hose not is if the coolant flow through the radiator is blocked completely as it might be if you left a rag behind.

Thermostat understanding

80s Tech probably on to something.

Ran it up to temp this AM and played with the heater. If I turned the heat on in the cabin the coolant temp immediately dropped a few degrees engine coolant temp. Turn the heat off temp rises. Got up to 99degrees idle and the coolant outlet temp gradually dropped from 75 to 61 degrees. Shut it off and the lower hose is consistent less hot to touch, top of the radiator is too hot to touch, bottom 2/3 not so hot.

Clogged radiator?

It's near impossible to have a flow restriction on the radiator. Pull off your t-stat and dunk it in a pot of boiling water the valve should basically slam open. If my car had the symptoms described here I would order a t-stat from Amazon and maybe before actually installing compare the two in boiling water to make sure the new one opens more than the old one.

If I'm correct the current t-stat does open just not far enough. If not the t-stat there is some other problem reducing the flow rate.

Latest is a swapped in a radiator that I had, probably functional, not 100% certain.

DIvergant temps once warmed up.

Goes from 80/65 to 90/55 to 100/50 keeps going up to 115/39 and I shut it down.

Thermostat next.

Concept question: thermostat opens to divert coolant to the radiator so it can cool down?

Has to be t-stat or water pump. You do have the fan installed? The elec fan operates based on the output temp so won't work if the coolant not flowing
