E53 4.4i & 4.8is SIB240605 Automatic Transmission 6HP26

To let you e53 4.4i / 4.8is owners know, there is an open SIB regarding the parking lock pin on the transmission being faulty. The fault is such that the pin becomes misaligned due to the material the mechanism is made of causing a distortion and poor lock. The result is a runaway vehicle on an incline.

There are other BMW’s affected, but for the e53, it will be the 4.4i and 4.8is with the 6HP26 transmission. I found out the not-so-fun way while in Seattle the other day. Leaving a parking garage, I had to stop on an incline and get out to open the garage door. I put the truck in park, with the e-brake on. Got out and took three steps. A loud bang/clang followed by the truck beginning to roll forward. I was able to jump in but by that time it had rolled enough to hit a barrier causing damage to the passenger side aero bumper. The park mechanism and e-brake could not hold the weight of the truck.

I backed up and while in the truck verified that the truck does indeed roll forward in park.

I highly suggest if you’re curious that you find a steep incline, put your truck in park and see if it rolls on its own.

I called my local dealer and spoke with a rep. So far everything regarding the SIB checks out and I am scheduled to drop it off in a few weeks. I’ll let you all know if BMW NA still honors this SIB while it is a serious safety issue.

Googled and could not find any mention/info regarding that TSB number. How steep of an incline are we talking?

Type (or copy/paste) the alphanumeric number as follows: SI B24 06 05. This is also cross-referenced with the NHTSA.

Off hand, the grade is >7 degrees.

This 14 year old bulletin shows that it affects specifically the E53 4.8is produced for 2 months in 2005. Is it what you are referencing or is there an update that includes the 4.4 N62's or a longer production run?

Solid information for new 4.8is owners of these chassis numbers from this short production run.

I am not exactly sure? The SIB states that the production numbers are a “general” guide for the dealerships conducting this repair. This is why I stated the transmission number too, because while the SIB states 05’ 4.8is trucks, it ALSO encompasses the transmission found on ALL 4.8is trucks. The production date for my truck is February 06’ yet has the transmission in question and obviously the runaway vehicle problem.

Yesterday afternoon I received an email from BMW stating that they will be repairing the problematic locking pin and all the associated gaskets & fluids stated in the SIB.

Iím not sure what youíre referring to with the Ďlocking piní as the faulty component described in the SIB is the guide plate (which hadnít been hardened properly).

The correctly hardened component is marked with an ĎXí to differentiate it, and this should be clearly visible once the sump pan is removed.

Iíve just put this video together showing the relevant parts, in case it helps to clarify how the mechanism works. These components are actually from a 5HP24, but the mechanism is identical to the 6HP26.

Thanks Phil for your helpful post.

As a general, I dropped off the truck last night to have this issue addressed. The representative informed me that she would have no word about the guide plate and rather fix an unrelated safety recall regarding an airbag sensor. I told her there are two references; one from BMW NA and one from the NHTSA stating my truck has the transmission with the known faulty guide plate. She didn’t want to hear one word about it and refused to look up the SIB. I told her that the appointment was for this guide plate and the two follow up emails were for the guide plate. Nope, here’s your loaner, we’ll call you when your airbag is done.

I just got off the phone with BMW NA and they are a bit perplexed how this was handled and will hear from someone in a few days.

Phew. Checked and nothing comes up for my vehicle for open recalls. My chassis number (LE4088) is just outside the included vehicles.

Hope BMW NA talks some sense into the dealer SA and gets it handled for you. Shame you have to fight with the service dept for things like this.

Edit: Amazing video Phil. You are invaluable here.
