Wife bought me the back ball joint tool for my birthday. About $80 Amazon. Nice tool has ball bearing thrust bushing.

On a 4.8is air bag system or standard suspension?

4.8is air bags will fail anytime after 10 years, so you replace them in pairs as needed! Go with Airnott. https://www.arnottindustries.com/pro...air-suspension

4.8is, so 2 axle air.

I replaced all 4 bags with Arnot a few years ago, and the fronts have the arnot rebuilt shocks.

Rears are still original. Anyway I ordered the Bilstein Touring rear shocks from FCP.

Ty all in again. I'll update this thread when I try that ball joint tool. Some reviews suggest I have to modify it to really make it work for the e53.

Last time I checked, anyone who makes and sells shocks will tell you you're living on borrowed time once you get to 50k miles.

Me, I'm at 190k miles on my original rear shocks on my '01 3.0i with springs, with no plans to change. I don't feel much of a difference on the race track, but that's mostly because I don't actually drive this on the race track.

I changed my front struts with Bilstein B4's a couple of years ago, probably around 180k miles, thinking I might be due. Cannot tell any difference at all. The car drives perfectly.

Kind of like I mentioned with the other parts, as long as you don't replace good old parts with lesser new ones, the only downside is cost.

When you have the car up jacks for whatever reason pull off the bottom of your shocks it's pretty simple to do.

If the shock doesn't have significant resistance to being compressed or extended or doesn't automatically extend to full length it's shot.

You can also sometimes tell if they are shot by bouncing the back end. If you even get one rebound bounce from a strong shove on the bumper usually means shocks are shot.

Yea doesn't bounce when I jumped around on the lower tailgate. Not significant. But on the highway, there are a few places where the bottom drops out from under the car types speed bumps. That gets quite unsettling.

You know, you are correct, so easy to just check that part. Shit I don't know why I didn't even check. Its ok. FCP has hassle free returns lol.

I just did my e70 rear suspension and at 135k everything in the back was mush. I still hurt from doing it piecemeal... Once you go in there just do the (inboard) bushings on the lower CA, the two upper CA, the integral links, the ball joints and the stabilizer end links. Although the part look different I think the principle of the rear suspension is similar on the e53 and e70.

The shocks on my e53 were toast well before 100k, replaced them quite a while back with OEM. Once I get the engine back into the e53 I am going to do the rear suspension, but this time in one fell swoop. :-)

The unsettling drop sounds like my car's problem: subframe bushings.

I didn't have to do a thing to it. There is a flat edge that is designed to go in the very small gap between the raised edge section and the ball joint itself. Get that lined up and it's sweet...
