I'm still on the fence but leaning towards original just because the rest of the car is original and idk, the newer units - while they do add more functionality - always seem a little too flashy for my tastes. I'm not an "entertainment system" guy and truth is, this car already has aux in so what would I even need an upgraded unit for? I even have an aftermarket nav in my E39 and I never use any of the features except the radio and bluetooth For now I'm gonna leave it and see what happens. It has developed 2 more bad pixel spots already though, so maybe that alone will prompt me to eventually go aftermarket...

I believe you can just buy the LCD panel for the nav screen and replace that. Not sure how difficult that is though.
Replacing the LCD is a little beyond my abilities

Tomorrow I have some very important parts coming in though Can't wait!

Well, in case you DO decide to replace the screen (and can find a buddy that can help with this!), here's a relly good write-up on the process...

Doesn't look too bad a job.

Nah. I was in the same boat as you. Have aux, Sirius. The new units have CarPlay, direct wire dash cam, Bluetooth audio. Backup cam. And you can code with them. You can actually code in halo as DRL. You can’t even code that with Inpa.

But yea. I’m still on the fence as well. $700 is a lot for something I barely drive.

So that definitely doesn't look as bad as I imagined... I thought it'd be like replacing the ribbon cable on an early E39/E53 gauge cluster. But in doing some research the screen looks to be about $90 on it's own. Couple that with the fact that I don't know what I'm doing, and ~$160 for a used good screen seems like an attractive option. But then again how much life left would a good used screen have. Conversely, how long would a new LCD last for if I installed it?

Truth is I don't really use the nav stuff that often, I use my phone for navigation, the unit is just a fancy radio really. So I'm gonna just leave it for now and think on it. Maybe an aftermarket nav with OEM-esque menu screens and such will pop up someday...

Yeah, but the only thing you mentioned from that list that I'd use is bluetooth. I don't see a reason for a rear backup camera on a car with great visibility like the E53 and front and rear PDC. CarPlay I don't even know what that is (and I'm a younger guy too, I probably should still be hip to all this BMW lingo but it's getting hard to keep up).

I can code with NCS proficiently and I like the process of doing so, so the unit doing the coding for me would actually be a drawback in my eyes I have my X5 coded perfectly how I want it right now in fact (set up basically to mirror my E39, high beam DRL's, no side parking lights at night, double blink hazards, etc).
FWIW - you CAN code the angel eye DRL using PA Soft. That is the *one* thing you can't code with NCS because it wasn't a factory option. Still pretty sure I could find a way to make it work though, there are "flags" in the system for the angel eye bulbs, as well as option lines for what lights are used as DRL's. May need a custom code or something to be installed, but you can do that on these LCM's...

Hmm that kind of makes me want to code on the angel eye DRL in PA Soft, then pull the module data with NCSexpert to see what changed in the coding Hmm.....

Angel eye DRL coding is not possible with NCS Expert, BMW Scanner 1.4, or any other software suite. It has been tried for years with no success. The only way for LCI E53 to light the halos as DRL is to send k-bus messaging for activation. Most of us are accomplishing this by using the iBus app from our Android head units.

Huh, that's weird. I assumed my friend had done it in PA Soft on his E39 but I just talked to him and he said he had to hardwire it like an E53. Guess I misunderstood that completely
In any case angel eye DRL's are not a feature I personally want so I'm probably done with coding the X5

To be honest, DRL halos was one of the main reasons I went with the Android head unit. The other was my X5 did not come with factory navigation so the decision to go aftermarket became clear. Once you go with an Android open sourced OS, you have so many more options than the outdated factory system that was designed from the 90's. Some of the features I use everyday on mine are:
  • Offline Navigation iGo Maps
  • Full featured radio with 18 presets and genre selection
  • Bluetooth audio streaming
  • Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
  • Bluetooth handsfree telephone
  • Backup cam
  • Front and rear dash cams constantly recording when running
  • Lane departure and collision avoidance
  • iBus app coding (DRL halos, cornering lights, DSP/BC control, triple blink turn signals)
  • 3.5mm auxilary audio/video input
  • WiFi capability

Honestly you are limited to your imagination. "There's an app for that". One of our members controls his smart home from his X5. He has the ability to set the climate control in his home, turn on welcome lights in front of his house and open the garage door from miles away.

Yeah but this is an X5, I don't need to set my home thermostat from it. That's "cool" sure but not something I'd ever want or use. Literally the only thing on that list I'd use is Bluetooth, and I have aux in already, so I'm just gonna buy a longer aux in cable and forget about it.

I have like, 8 BMW's that all need love and attention. If I go blowing my whole attention load all over the X5 the other cars get jealous. So no upgraded nav for the X5 at least for now. I had my E39 for almost a year before I bought it an aftermarket nav. And the E39 aftermarket nav does all that stuff too and yet I don't use ANY of it. So just further supports my thinking that I should spend that nav money elsewhere on the car...

I understand. The smart home control was just an example of the capabilities of a system that is from the current millennium, I don't use it either.

Level sensor just showed up! That was crazy fast, didn't even pay for the faster shipping method. Thanks FCP

Now I'm gonna head to the shop to install that sucker... have one other thing to pick up for the X5 too while I'm out
