Programming/Coding What Supply Are You Using?

For coding I usually just turn the vehicle on as modules can be coded with engine running but not programmed obviously. What supplies are you guys using to maintain the voltage (13.2v?) required by INPA/ISTA and 45A spec'd by BMW?

I just programmed out my rain-sensing wipers to a standard delay using NCS expert. I did it quickly by turning the key to position 2 (no start) and coding off just the well-charged battery. I had planned what i was going to do and was quick, but I was still nervous the whole time. I read codes - turn off- modify script in NCS off-line - tuned ignition back on - write the codes - turn off.

Usually, I plug in my battery charger on the "jump" setting (maybe 60 amps?). As you noted, a low-amp trickle charge is not what you want.

I've done it running and on a trickle charger. It doesn't murder the battery if you have all your stuff off. Like screen, bluetooth, aircon, lights, music.

I've run the car in "on" mode for an hour easy. The battery is like a 90AH battery. If it draws 5a key on engine off I'd be surprised. Should have no problem for a couple hours as long as you run it after to charge it up. If battery cant handle 60-90 minutes of "on" it's lost enough capacity it should be replaced anyhow.

I'm curious about the 13.2 requirement I haven't used the laptop for programming but just about any normal charger should do the job if it's actually required.

Flashing the DME or EGS would be the only time I have 13 volts being charged into the system but there are some guys that roll the dice and flash without a charger connected. Anything like INPA, NCS Expert or BMW Scanner I do without any kind of charger.

Not ideal, but I had two 4-amp chargers hooked up (it was all I had available). I let 'em run for an hour or so to ensure the battery was topped off. Got my coding done without issue. I've been contemplating buying a 30 amp charger for future use. I can't imagine 30 amps being insufficient.

I do everything with a laptop using DIS, ISTA, ProgMan, etc. If I don't have the charger going for a while prior to connecting, I'll get a low voltage error in DIS or ProgMan.

I use my Stanley 25A automatic charger (a good, but standard charger. nothing special) pretty much whenever I'm working on the car for more than a few minutes (even for key out, doors open stuff). It's pretty much standard procedure for me on all my cars.

When charging, the battery is at about 14V, the battery can provide several (7?) hundred CCAs any time it wants, and has a capacity (believing AndrewWynn's number above) of 90 Ah.

I can't see what type of coding would actually not be met with this setup. And specifically meeting those voltage and current specs (13.2V, 45A), even continuously, should be no problem for at least an hour, maybe two.

I've done a lot of coding / programming (including going to eu2 on my dme), and I wouldn't do it without at least a 10 amp charger attached.

No need for overkill. I use a black & Decker (made by vector) vec1093 smart charger that can put out 40 amps continuous. It was around $50-60 when I bought it. It satisfied DIS when I retrofit coded navigation to my old e39 touring years ago.
