Have I bricked my MK3 nav?

After relocating to Australia, I recently bought a super cheap E53 to get around in for a year or so. I had one of these years ago, and was always fond of it.

I had the Mk3 nav, but no disc. For a laugh, I downloaded the software update disc as it was still on the original 2002 software. The only computer I have access to that still has an optical drive is my MacBook, and it will only burn .iso - apparently there are no further updates from V25 for the MK3, but I could only find a V32 disc so went with that. Also downloaded the latest (2012) map.

I followed the procedure with drivers door open, key in 1st position etc. After putting the disc in the loading software message came up... Then it went blank. I gave it 15 minutes in case something was happening... The nav drive was making a disc reading noise every 30 secs or so, but the power light was off. Ejected the disc, and turned key off then on - now the screen has reverted to the blue/gray non-nav version.

Can I recover from here, or am I off to the wreckers to find a MK4?

I've had that issue befoe. Get the proper latest MK3 version (V22 I think), and burn that to a CD (NOT DVD) and insert it. I would not use an .iso, use what the V22 was native on and imageburn.

If you're lucky it will reload V22, be prepared with a V17 Key disk also.

Phew! Since there are very few disc burning tools for mac (they haven't had optical drives since about 2012) I ended up installing a trial version of Parallels, and Windows 10 which can be used for 14 days before registering... Got Imgburn which confirmed the V32 image I had was MODE1. Scoured the internet for a MODE2 version, burnt it to disc, held the MK3 eject button for 3 minutes to force eject the old disc, popped in the new disc... 6 minutes later the software was reloaded, CD Key requested and inserted, then the map.

Success!

Then I had a chuckle at the primitive GPS image which I will probably never use, because it's hopelessly out of date and a phone does 1000x better job. At least what is there now works as intended :-)

Usually there are other features available like color schemes, night color schemes, different map colors, map options and the like. On some versions you can even put in your own splash screen. For example on my E39 540i M Sport I had the ///M logo. I forget the native size of the image, but so as long as your image is cropped to that, you can use virtually anything you want. Lastly, some modified software versions will skip the warning screen whenever you start your truck.
