There could be any number of reasons for the transmission behavior including that it was written into the software to draw attention to the misfire and pressure you into fixing it.
1988 325is (purchased new)
2004 X5 3.0 (new to me) 2005 X3 2.5 (new to wife)

Maybe, but the more I think about it, it seems like the transmission was using sport mode for the 2-1 and normal for all other gears.

It'll be my luck that stray voltage from the bad coil wire magically jumped to the transmission control using the power of GM..

I've been over here too long. I came outside today and it was 34.5c and all I could think of was that it was getting cold out...
