What is the best way to protect brake lines?

- As we replace rear brake metal lines from corrosion, what is the best way
to protect the metal lines after repairs?

1. I will drill holes in the plastic cover to periodically spray
some water to rinse winter salt.

2. How about very gently sand the factory (still good) and new lines just a bit.
Then coat with primer paint?

3. Then add a bit of oil/grease mixture?

Over the years, I find a bit of oil on rusty metal body parts
slows down the rust.

PS: maybe every Spring, remove the plastic cover and rinse/clean manually
By rubbing the salt off using soft cloth?

Prob the best thing to do is unclip the lines from any hanging hardware and scrub off the loose rust with a small steel brush then treat with naval jelly or the likes to freeze the rusting action.

After that treatment follow the post treatment directions I don't remember if you have to wash and clean before treating but then paint with Rust-Oleum. Spray won't get the back side so use like a tooth brush (with liquid enamel paint not spray). You can prob just paint without the naval jelly I think Rust-Oleum paint has the function built right in.

Once you paint it should be almost maintenance free. Maybe check every few years.

You can get into the space by removing all the screws but leaving all the plastic rivets and bending down the panel. I'm not 109% that gives you enough room to paint but will give you enough room to spray a hose.

I normally try not to drive any of my cars when the road is full of salts.

Replace the old lines with Cupronickel lines.

Not sure that paint would hold up.

Maybe I over-think this issue...

Car is 2006 X5 3.0i 6soMT with 130K.
If it takes 13 yrs to get rust bad enough to leak,
then it is not bad at all.
I don't think I will keep this car for another 13 yrs.

If I frequently rinse the chassis on warm days in the winter,
I should not have any further issue with corrosion.

Next time, I will use Ni-Copp line...
