White noise and clicks from speakers - even with the radio off

Noticed some clicking the other day, noticed it was from the speakers. Thats when I noticed the white noise.

I turned on the radio and the white noise stopped for a second, then came back, then the music.

Wonder if anyone has experienced this? This is on the 3.0 with nav and dsp.

Common from an audio system that has a separate amp. Wondering if the signal to turn the amp off/on with the head unit is not signalling off. (or if the dsp model does use an external amp)

Yes the DSP system has a proprietary external amp.

I've never experienced having an amp not turn off before, in factory and aftermarket systems, but I suppose there is a first time for everything lol!

I did a bit of googling and someone posted about an E39 M5 DSP system with the same problem.

He opened his amp and saw some darkened windings and based on that decided to replace the amp with a used one off ebay.

Unfortunately his next posts were about the new amp starting to cut out after a few seconds and he did not elaborate if the white noise disappeared. But I guess his not mentioning it means it was resolved by the amp replacememt, and the cutting out is a new problem? Unfortunately the thread petered out at that point.

Will try to include the E38 in the search, I think their DSP system is very closely related to ours.
