3.0 automatic - harsh shift 3-4?

I noticed that I am getting harsh shifts from 3-4.

The closer to redline the shift, the harsher it gets.

At the lowest possible rpm upshift its all smooth, but as you upshift at a bit higher rpm you can start to feel a bit of abruptness, gets worse the higher the rpm the upshift.

It doesnt bang (yet), but it really stands out as the rest of the shifts are buttery smooth.

Right now I am trying my best to make the 3-4 shift as smooth as possible to keep any damage to a minimum till I get home (on the road still).

Any are the possible causes? Any way to troubleshoot this?

Do you ever get odd display in your dash for the gear eg no display or two numbers light at once? Eg 54.

Nope, no trans gear icon lighting up, no trans failsafe warning, the trans display never disappeared or showed anything other than its supposed to.

Does it shift hard under moderate acceleration or only when you have your foot to the floor? Only time I could get the X5 to shift near redline is when I had my foot to the floor. Other time the shift was always way under redline.

Yes it will only shift at redline with foot to floor, otherwise it shifts before. Exact shift point varies with throttle position. I can get it to shift up early by letting off the throttle slightly. No weird behavior in that regard at the moment.

At moderate acceleration it doesnt shift hard, but the shift is a bit abrupt, without the usual "slurring". The closer to redline, the more abrupt the shift.

This only happens with the 3-4 shift, any other shift up or down is smooth and well damped.

I hope my description makes sense.

Do you have a a scanner that can read the transmission solinoid pressures?

When you have your foot to the floor the DME is telling the EGS too hold the shift for faster acceleration. If before even when you held your foot to the floor the 3-4 shift wasn't that harsh would indicate a pressure problem with the 3-4 clutch pack. You can try the cheap fix with a fluid replacement, but most likely you will need to replace the valve body. Since the trans is not slipping, I'm going to assume the clutch pack is still good, but I wouldn't be driving like this until you find out what they problem is. High pressure can damage the internal drums of the trans.

Not at the moment. I had INPA but the netbook I had it in crashed. I'm not even sure if it can read that data but I was wanting to try to reset adaptations to see if it would help, and also scan for EGS- specific codes.

Thanks for the insight! I came across more info in my research along those lines.

If I understood correctly the valve body has accumulators whose job is to absorb fluid pressure to the clutches and moderate pressure to them so the shifts are damped. The springs apparently can break and cause harsh shifts.

I also saw reference to the valve body being "soft" and wearing out over time, causing pressure problems in the trans.

There is mention of sticking valves also, which is maybe what can be resolved by a fluid change?

No point in resetting trans adaptations unless you change something (more the just filter fluid too) - it won't help in the long term and in the short term the trans will have to re-learn the shift pressures required for your trans, so it'll be worse.
